Why won't the Hosers leave them alone? Is it the same reason the Goosenibblers can't stop harassing Brian?

CAVE-IN-ROCK, Ill.-- And when all was said and done, this is why the Juggalos gathered.

In a dependably splashy, hard-working set from Detroit duo Insane Clown Posse, Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope pulled out all their tricks as they brought their 13th Gathering of the Juggalos to its climax late Saturday night.

It was the energetic, bright-colored, dazzling climax to a dusty countryside festival that’s set to wrap up today in rural Illinois.

The 75-minute set featured a heap of songs from the new “Mighty Death Pop” album, due in stores Tuesday, most of them being heard by these fans for the first time.

One of those numbers -- lead single “Chris Benoit”-- kicked off the show shortly after midnight as thousands of fans pressed toward the main stage. The new material was markedly distinct from the ICP classics that surrounded it, dominated by rock beats, melodic bobbing bass lines and soaring pop choruses.

The Faygo was unleashed by the 10th minute, during “The Show Must Go On,” as the face-painted Violent J, Shaggy 2 Dope and their cast of zombie jesters drew from four big barrels stacked with the Detroit pop.

Fans in front got gleefully soaked for the cause, as showers of sticky soda rained 30 yards deep and half-filled bottles went hurtling toward the back.

The crowd, offering a final surge of energy after four days in the August heat, chanted along to vintage tunes like “Hokus Pokus” and welcomed the confetti (“Down With the Clowns”) and feathers (“Chicken Huntin’”) and that came later in the show.

Fans had been primed for hours, assembling early at the main stage for a sizzling set by Kansas City rapper Tech N9ne and a hit-and-miss performance by old-school Texans the Geto Boys. Over their heads was a swirl of glowsticks, supersized plastic balls, blowup sharks and pumping fists.

Plowing through hoarse voices, ICP delivered typical high showmanship, as 37-year-old Shaggy belied his years with an athletic display, scampering 20 feet up the stage scaffolding and leaping into the arms of fans below.

It all built to the lengthy crescendo of “Bang! Pow! Boom!” with dozens of friends and artists hitting the stage for a Faygo explosion, as Violent J wielded a fire hose to drench the crowd in a blue stream. A Fourth of July-worthy fireworks display over the stage brought the show to a close.

And with that fans scattered off into the dark, soaked and gushing about what they’d just seen, some already trading notes about their Gathering plans next year.
