Innocent man murdered, Olean, NY

I recall (from many years ago), my mother telling of her uncle 'George' who was murdered in downtown Olean, NY. He was 'in the wrong place at the wrong time'.
Seems to me, the story was that a black male crossed the street and stabbed him to death as he stood in the doorway of a buisness on Union St., would have been probably around 1944 or so. The murderer then claimed mistaken idenity,(he meant to kill someone else). He was convicted, did time and I think was paroled.
I know it was a long time ago, does anyone remember anything about this case? Any information would be helpful.

No, I'm afraid not, I always thought that it happened in the 50's but I talked to an aunt this summer and she was sure it was mid 40's, '44 she thought...I knew it wouldn't be easy, I just wondered if anyone remembered anything about it. I know it's a longshot, I appreciate the effort
