I recall (from many years ago), my mother telling of her uncle 'George' who was murdered in downtown Olean, NY. He was 'in the wrong place at the wrong time'.
Seems to me, the story was that a black male crossed the street and stabbed him to death as he stood in the doorway of a buisness on Union St., would have been probably around 1944 or so. The murderer then claimed mistaken idenity,(he meant to kill someone else). He was convicted, did time and I think was paroled.
I know it was a long time ago, does anyone remember anything about this case? Any information would be helpful.

Uncle George was a Keller, brother of Lawrence, Herm, and another brother actually died on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, but I don't know anything about that either. I only remember these stories from my childhood

This might be asking an awful lot but do you have a better date? Some places it's easier to search if you have a date, like old newspaper searches, you put in dates and sometimes the article shows up..

No, I'm afraid not, I always thought that it happened in the 50's but I talked to an aunt this summer and she was sure it was mid 40's, '44 she thought...I knew it wouldn't be easy, I just wondered if anyone remembered anything about it. I know it's a longshot, I appreciate the effort
