Ridge Landfill in Old Town

Casella Waste System's recent withdrawal of their application to expand the Juniper Ridge landfill in Old Town has pleased several local groups and citizens.

But those opposed to the expansion also know there's a lot more work ahead of them.

Meghan Hayward reports.

Several groups in the Old Town area are happy with the withdrawal of a license application by Casella Waste Systems and the state planning office, to expand the Juniper Ridge landfill in Old Town.

The withdrawal comes after the Maine Department of Environmental Protection denied the application.

Opponents of the expansion don't believe the landfill is benefiting the people of Maine.

"Our assumption is that when the state acquired the landfill, everyone was told it was for Maine for having a home for Maine solid waste. And as it turns out, a lot of waste is going there that isn't from Maine but it's processed in various ways in Maine."

Those opposed also say the landfill isn't providing enough revenue to the state.

"This landfill generates a lot of revenue. It generates the revenue for a particular contractor. The state is basically not getting any revenue from this, even though it owns it."

Paul Schroeder of Orono says he expects Casella to reapply for the expansion in at least two years.

"I think that what we need is to have more open information and what we see as coming out of this meeting today is that people will want to get more informed about these issues as we move ahead."

Schroeder says the state is not compiling comprehensive public data about the origins and amount of trash brought to Juniper Ridge from other states.

But a new group called Trash Tracking Network is trying to launch a project to do just that.

They've just been awarded a grant that will allow people to go out and follow the trucks with GPS's.

"When they leave Massachusetts and until they arrive here in Maine and how out-of-state waste becomes in-state waste."

We spoke with Don Meagher, Manager of Planning and Development of Casella Waste Systems, he tells us there are no out-of-state trucks that go directly to the Juniper Ridge landfill.

Meagher also says that since 2004, they have provided a monthly tally to the DEP, city of Old Town, and the landfill advisory committee that shows where each truck comes from and what they're carrying.

He says the members of the landfill advisory committee have not been able to identify a single truck that has come from out-of-state to the Juniper Ridge landfill.
