I tink something weird is going on here.catalytic converters are not easy to cut off. I can't imagine trying to cut one off in a parking lot.
1.unless it was an suv you would have to raise a car up.
2.it took me 2hrs to cut a cc off with a hacksaw.
3.a battery powered sawsall would be hard to do because cc's set so close to the floorboard and it would be loud.
4.new cc's can cost anywhere from $100-300, so how much would you get for a used one.
5.when I go to the junk yard most, junk cars still have their cats.
I don't know what the deal is, but I don't people are out there stealing cats from parking lots.

A reputable welding and fabrication company in Toledo, OH. has a new patented theft deterrent designed just for catalytic converters . It makes too much work for the thieves in a hurry. The CatClamp is the only theft deterrent on the market designed exclusively to fight catalytic converter theft. It was in Newsweek online in January 09, 2008. Go to Catclamp.com the CatClamp is much cheaper than repairing a vehicle after catalytic converter theft.

Something weird IS going on here. All those cats that were "stolen" off a lot in Old Hickory, must have been an inside job. First off, theives are doing it for the money, then obviously they dont have the money to buy the high powered cordless sawzall which run about $400 a pop, not too mention the blades. Like Bob said, it isn't an EASY job that takes 30 seconds like they said on TV. You have to have the car jacked up,or raised in the air by being up on a tow truck of some sort, then you have to SEE what you are cutting, plus the noise it makes will make ANYONE wonder what is going on under the vehicle. I think this is all a joke. I seriously can't see how theives do it. We run a reputable Towing service & remove our cats before we take them to the junkyard & by all means it is not a 30 second job. ESPECIALLY if they are foreighn cars with double wall pipe. No hacksaw would even cut thru them. And BTW they are the ONLY cats that pay over $200 (Benz, exotic) all the rest start at $14..most pay about $75. So where they got the $250 a piece from I have NO IDEA! I am pretty sure I know what is going on here. This is just another way the government can collect more taxes. Right now there are no taxes on this cash sale deal. They are talking about having everyone that buys or sells converters have a Tax ID # to show when they make transactions, they say this is to ward off the theft, but I say it's another way for BIG BROTHER to collect more of our hard earned money!
Just my 2 cents! I wish NewsChannel5 would go along with a towing company that junks their cars & see just how it's done.

My cat was stolen on my truck this weekend in Old Hickory. My sister borrowed my car Friday night and returned it about 1am to my office complex Saturday morning. I came in on Monday and started it up and it sounded like a big truck. We looked under the car and realized my cat had been cut off. Half the metal pieces are laying under my car. It happens people!! Watch your cars!
