I make my morning commute to work in the Dallas area. It's before rush hour and 85% of it is freeway - posted speed limit is 60mph. My speed will be 50-65 but tends to be 10 under. Generally there are three lanes - I'm on the rightmost one. Most would-be tailgaters go ahead and pass when I put on the emergency flashers when they get 50 yards behind. Other drivers freely get to pass me unless they insist on not doing so. There are plenty of 18-wheelers in traffic reports without me making their life even harder by tailgating them. Besides, the urban traffic is far too dynamic for close drafting to make sense.
I've found fuel savings of 50% over going 10mph+ over the speed limit in the past, not to mention avoiding a couple of tickets on pullovers. I had about three collisions when I was driving faster, but none with my current form of driving.
How my work commutes constitutes stupidity or "smugness" escapes me, although some find pleasure in inventing fictional road hazards - arn't you giving a blind eye to plenty of REAL hazardous drivers?

I'll spare this board the long explanation, but I've discussed it at another forum.
