I think the Olathe School Board should be held responsible for this. They knew how busy this intersection is. Seeing that they are just a block away from it. We had a cross guard there up to the middle of last year. When they moved him to the intersection of 143rd and Brougham. That left all the kids that cross Blackbob in danger. I am well aware of the financial problems that Olathe schools are having, but they shouldnt cut cost where the safty of our kids are concerned.

Where are the Crossing Guards?
not just the schools

You can't blame everything on the schools. True, a crossing guard would have been beneficial, but the parents are held responsible first. Why was this child not wearing a helmet? Also, his parents should have known there was no longer a crossing guard there and taught him how to follow traffic signals so as to stay safe. The article does not indicate if the truck was following traffic laws, but they might be at fault as well. Don't immediately blame the schools.

What I heard was the truck turned right on red, and he didn't see the boy "because the sun was in my eyes". I think the driver, the school, and the city are all at fault. The driver is at fault for not investing in sunglasses, the school is at fault for not only having a "profits before safety" mentality but also for not alerting parents that the crossing guard at that intersection was let go and parents needed to find another route for their kids to get to school, and the city is at fault for knowing its a dangerous intersection but doing nothing about it.

Seriously, people, get off your high horse long enough to do a little homework before you go assigning blame. Schools don't provide the crossing guards, they are the responsibility of the city.

Its the parents responsibility to get their kidds to school safly. But this is 2010 its easier for the parents and people to sue and blame everyone else. NOT

My son did follow all the rules and went when the light told him to go. That doesn't always make you safe. A crossing guard would have made all the difference in the world. I'm not trying to blame anyone but we can't watch our children 24/7 so the person saying we are all responsible for our own children I hope nothing like this ever happens to your child, you might see things differently. And for you in Excelsior( no name) I have no intention of suing anyone and tell me please what I need to do differently, again hoping this never happens to your child.

Well since you asked no name of the boy involved, i unlike you I put my kidds in my truck or their mother or grandmother take them every morning and drive them there and we pick them up in the afternoon does that answer your question. with all the creeps and people who have no business driving we feel it is safer doing it that way. heres why my daughter got ran over in my driveway by a little punk drug dealer think god she was not hurt bad but he had to get some new teeth, his face ran into my fist as he was tring to leave the scene. the speed limit in front of my house is 20 mph he was doin aprox. 60 and im getting to old for that much excitment.
