Well I will tell you. We have a former County Commissioner that has walked away from his 5th DUI felony convicetion without even paying a fine. Meth labs are everywhere. Half the stores are closed and the streets are dirty. Typical federal tribal town that you would find in any minority ruled community. Now, if you are searious about a nice town to move to we would suggest Morris, Beggs or Twin Hills. All have excellent Police and Fire protection with very little crime and the school systems would be better than usual in small communities. The roads are in horrible shape in District 2 (Okmulgee Commissioner District) but otherwise better than normal for the area. The residents are soft spoken with little to say about anything and probably doesn't care beyond their own wants and needs. Most are Liberal Minority and support minority politicians regardless of their Criminal background and anti-american attitude for which your grandfaters died for at Pearl and Omaha Beach.

Nacogdoches Texas is a nice mid sized town. Lots of college kids from Steven F. Austin Univ. A mix of races, ages and ideologies. An hour and a half away from malls and cities with decent shopping. I live in the county but I hear the same old gripes about the local goverment like any where else. Lots of churches lots of hidden drugs etc. not a bad place to live.
I just have all my grandbabies in OK and want to be near them so we are looking for a semi rural area to plant our hobby farm and do what we are supposed to do.

Move to Morris, Preston even Beggs, but sadly not Henryetta, not anymore. This used to be a clean, wonderful place to grow up, to raise your children, to live out your day in. Not anymore.....

Stay as rural as you can. The city of Okmulgee is not the place to be. The school is horrible and the crime rate is very high. It is like a tiny Chicago...gun violence, gangs, and a very corrupt municipal government. Its a nasty looking city.
Morris/Twin Hills area is not too bad.

Maybe Moving Here.
Okmulgee is home for many of us. It is not even close to Chicago or Detroit. Its funny life is what you make it and how you see where you live. Yes Okmulgee has problems and needs to be fixed up. The Economy has been hit hard here but we have good people that live and work here. If youíre looking for a rural area try out by the Okmulgee Lake. We have our share of bad people as well. Like every place in the world. I would suggest you rent till you know what youíre really looking for and the area you like.

Lets forget about the kids using or selling drugs in this city for just a moment. Lets focus on the parents of those kids. Most are hardworking, honest people with the same problems other locales have. As parents, you never know how your kid is going to turn out. You do your best, along with alot of hoping and praying. It works most of the time but like national levels, we do have our share to deal with here.

You will probably have more encounters here with an unfriendly city administration than in most places. Most cities would welcome new business and at least for appearances, would train their staff to be friendly to residents, knowing that is where their salary originates. You won't find much of that positive attitude in Okmulgee.

You could discover once here that local banks try to set the pace in local government. In recent years the King and Queen of city hall represented the interests of Citizen's Bank. Thank Jesus they moved away. Until we, the citizens of Okmulgee elect a mayor with our interests at heart things will probably not change. Hey! it could happen!
We have a chance here soon to make that difference. Time was that if you voted the wrong candidate, your loan wouldn't get approved. THAT NEEDS TO CHANGE FOLKS!

Thank you again for everyone's opinions. A true shame from the out side looking in. You all have a nice looking area based on statistics, soil, water tables etc. But, unless a community has a heart to keep a place nice it is hard to want to move in and do our part. We may still move here, become hermits (j/k). If so maybe we can make our place a bit like Home.

Okmulgee is overun by druggies and a corrupt political system. Everyone is related or childhood friends. Okmulgee could be a beautiful place, but the people make it an unsafe breeding ground for corruption and hate.

Maybe moving here- any city or town has its fair share of problems. I grew up in Henryetta. I moved away as a teenager and I came back. I do live outside of town so the city politics don't affect me or my family as much as many of the people that you have heard from on here. I love living in a small town. Of course, there are drawbacks (everybody knows everybody else's business, drugs, etc.). But, there are drugs everywhere now. The school system does well for the size it is. And people generally care about their neighbors. As a kid growing up here, I couldn't wait to get out of this town. But as a parent, I realized that its really not a bad place to raise a child. I hope this helps!:)

Yeah, its a great place to raise kids if you want to die at 13.
If I remember correctly, Landon Jewell was shot and killed in cold blood, by his 13 year old friend, who is the step-son of a police officer in Henryetta.
Thus far, he remains free to roam the streets enjoying life, while Landon lies in the cold ground.

HENRYETTA, Oklahoma -- A 14-year-old Henryetta boy has been charged in Okmulgee County court with second degree murder in the death of a 13-year-old in December.

The shooting happened at a home in the 1000 block of West Cummings Street in Henryetta on December 10, 2010.

The victim, Landon Jewell, was visiting the home of a Henryetta police officer at the time of the shooting.

The charge was filed on June 9, 2011 by the Muskogee County DA's office.

The Muskogee County DA's office was assigned the case by Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt after the Okmulgee County District Attorney's office recused itself from the case.

The Muskogee County DA's office says it doesn't expect to file any charges against the police officer who owned the home where the shooting happened.
