Officials identify 5-year-old victim from fatal I-40 incident in Oklahoma

TEXOLA — Officials identified Miranda Chloee Espinoza-Hernandez, 5, of Oklahoma City, as the pedestrian killed in an incident following a crash early Wednesday on Interstate 40 in Beckham County.


Miranda was a passenger in an eastbound sport utility vehicle that rolled and crashed on the freeway about 3:45 a.m., troopers said. The SUV driver, Jessica Elaine Hernandez, 25, of Oklahoma City, was thrown out.

One of two other children in Hernandez's car was standing next to Hernandez, who was lying in the road, as an eastbound tractor-trailer rig in the left lane approached the crash, the patrol reported. The rig driver, Stephen Craig Carter, 43, of Shallotte, N.C., swerved into the right lane to avoid Hernandez and the child, but Miranda was lying in the right lane. He swerved to avoid Miranda, but couldn't turn the rig in time.

Hernandez died at a Sayre hospital, the patrol reported. Miranda died at the scene, but it is unclear if she died before or after Carter's rig ran over her, troopers said. The two other children in Hernandez's car were flown to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, and one has since been released and the other is in good condition today, a hospital spokesman said. Carter and another man in the rig were not hurt.

No one in Hernandez's car was wearing a seat belt, the patrol reported. Carter and his passenger were.

Yes--extremely SAD--And Prayers for the truck driver as well.(It is NOT going to be "easy" for him/her to "live" with it either.)

Although the truck friver did what could be done to AVOID this accident--"Survivor's Guilt" is bad.
