I would be courious of the ratio of students per teacher and the ethnicity of the school and if there is a reason some student learn more than others. schools should NOT be used as babsitters the parents should still do their job following up with their kids studies.

Replace the faculty. U.S. Grant was recently rebuilt, so it makes no sense to close the facility and relocate the students.

The two main problems are 1) The area around Grant has become poverty stricken in the last 10 years, and 2) There is a large hispanic population that lives in Grant's district, and the kids can't speak or read enough English to pass the tests. The parents can't speak or read enough English to help with the tests, and it's pretty clear they don't WANT to learn English either. I don't know how the teachers can be held responsible for this, but they make for easy scapegoats.
When is OKC public schools going to hold the kids responsible for their own future. I would bet dollars to doughnuts that the lowest performing students are the troublemakers that are already on their 5th or 6th year of High School. Kick them out!!! Stop giving these kids 10th, 11th, and 12th chances. They don't want to go to school! Stop making them go! They are ruining education for the rest of the kids.

I is fittin to be gwon to da storr to git som ribs.
Fire all of the faculty and especially the principal, hope for the grant to go through and deal with the problem of poor teaching abilities of the staff! Students will absorb what they are taught. It's similar to the computer programming addage:
Garbage in--Garbage out!
You need to get rid of the 'old dog' teaching abilities of the senior staff. New staff-new ideas.

This is America! Speak English only, please. JADA I bet you hate Hispanics! You have a lot of anger towards the Hispanic community in your message. You need a HS diploma to say: "Would you like fries with that Big Mac?" and make money, legetimately. Do dope and commit crimes with no diploma necessary! Stay in school and graduate, then get a real job for life, por favor.

Its not the teachers or principals failing these kids. There hands are tied most of the time when it comes to making any changes. It takes these kids wanting to learn and to do well.

Wow...close the school??? Isn't it brand new? Well..I guess if they relocate the kids maybe they can consolidate the elementary schools to Grant so the younger kids can have a decent building to attend.

Wonder what MAPS would have to say about closure. Did MAPS money pay for that building?

Sounds like the no child left behind didn't work here. Why would they close a school that they just built? We need to look at ourselves as parents then go from there.

Good idea. Fire the teachers. It is their fault the kids come from bad families, don't care about school and pursue lives of crime because it is more lucrative for them than graduating and cleaning floors for the rest of their lives.

You spend millions of dollars on a brand new state of the art High School and this is what you get for your money???? A week after it was open the place was covered in graffiti... The kids in this area just don't value an education school is a place to hang with the homies and get a free lunch... Some day the kids in this area may care but for now they don't... Send all the non hackers to some run down city slum of a school and make this new school a place where only the best can come to learn... Getting rid of the teachers is not the answer this is not the old lemons into lemonade story it's the give me dirt and I can make mud nothing more...

This is about the silliest thing that I have ever heard! It is not the Principals fault! If the kids are not learning I think I know who's fault it is. THE KIDS!

Another bad investment by our city officals. Mapps with no oversite just like the old cox center, the ford center and the AAA only ballpark. They spend your tax dollars to build these projects, refurbish and then have to refurbish again because they cut quality. The ballpark would have to be torn down and relocated to ever have a major park.Seems there is NO future, down the road thinking. Ever time they do this to our tax paying citizens it's always JUST a few million more to make it right.

I grew up in the Capitol Hill area of OKC but was fortunate enough to go to a private school. My parents both went to the public schools there in that area and it was scary enough when they went that they didn't want to take a chance sending me there. I can't imagine what it is like now. You can have the nicest building in the state, but if the people there don't care, no education will be given to those kids. The kids don't care, the staff probably cared when they graduated from college and thought they'd go teach and change the world, but then they got out there and realized that their hands are tied on every front. They can't discipline the children (and I don't just mean spankings) as there is nothing they can do that can really be enforced. The parents either don't care or get ticked off if anyone tries to discipline their kids so they fight the system constantly and set a "fantastic" example for their kids, who learn to ignore the school staff and do what they want. The few who probably do want to learn are afraid to admit it, and probably can't speak enough English (or don't want to) to ask for the help they need. Yes, this is America (actually, the United States of America) and English has been the common language that all who lived here learned so that there would be a unified way to communicate. That doesn't mean you have to give up your background and your history, but what good does it do you to fight learning the common language?! That's like cutting off your nose to spite your face. It does NOT make sense. Basically though, there are far too many problems to be able to give it a real fix, so they'll make some changes to give it a quick fix - essentially a "lick and a promise" - then it'll go right back to where it's been for over 50 years. Sad, but no one wants to really accept the responsibility to make real changes. Everyone just wants to point fingers and blame others. Our society is too embedded in the rut of entitlement. All want to take but not enough want to give.

This reminds me of that movie based on the true story of the high school that was so dangerous and dirty,(cant remember the name of it). We need to stop blaming everyone and say this is what it is. Gather the students and give them the choice. IF you want to be here this is what is expected, if not go somewhere else. IT doesnt matter what race or language, it has to do with students, parents and school officials taking back the schools, providing quality education and expecting no less. Make it a priviledge to come to our schools and learn. You can not force a young person to learn or respect themselves, education or anything else if they are choosing not to. This should also go for the teachers. There are plenty of jobs in the district apparently where it doesnt matter if you want to teach or not. If OKC wants to continue to grow and prosper, we must provide quality education to the children who want to learn without them fearing for their safety.

What this country needs is the military draft, regardless of race, color or legal residency or not. This would stop a good deal of the foolishness in this country as it did back when we had it in effect. Many countries make military service mandatory.
Kids today, think they can goof off in school and do as they please. The attitude starts early on, not in high school. We see kids 7, 8, 9 years old going to the elementary school down the street from us, always late for school. You didn't see that 30 years ago.
Busing students. Another big bunch of hooey. All this amounts to is a big make work project for the automotive industry. Expensive diesel school buses, at the end of their usefulness, after only 10 years, regardless of mileage, yet they go south to Mexico, Central and South America and work on for years to come.
Kids, all kids, need to go to school and receive a good education in their OWN neighborhoods. This builds a solid society. Bus the faculty!!!

The neighborhoods in the Grant district are older, may not have the most money, may be mostly hispanic, but it is not one single persons fault alone. The kids need to take accountability and take more pride in their future. The teachers need to do more home visits and communicate with the parents, and this " no child left behind law " is not the answer because really in the long run when the school has no more funding because of things that are not always in their control ie:children not attending classes, having communication issues, etc it really leaves the school as a whole behind! Race is not an issue, but how do you teach a child who's primary language is not english and that's all you know how to speak? It is not the schools fault that it is the location it is in. Racist people need to get off there high horse and think more logical! This is America!
