I am sure there is a whole other "side" of this but because of confidentiality we'll never know what was the precursor. This principal has a stellar record, so something really intense must have triggered this reaction. But having been in education, why aren't the staff members protected from violent students? There have been a number of staff members injured by elementary and middle school students to the degree of having to go to the doctor. Nothing is done to stop this. Staff are told to forget it and are penalized for not wanting to teach these students although laws are supposed to be in place so that teachers/staff do not have to teach students who have shown violence toward them. When a students bites, scratches, or spit staff is not allowed to know if the student has hepatitus, AIDS, etc. Parents send us the kids they can not handle and public school must take them. An investigation into the number of educational staff attacked by students would be appropriate.

This is a bad deal no matter how you look at it. But there are situations, such as dealing with emotionally/mentally challenged students, that take a certain type of care, which does not involve striking/slapping a five year old student in the face. And she may have had a stellar record but that does not mean there have not been occasions where she has over-stepped those boundaries.

Sunset ELEMENTARY school! Kindergarten and 1st. This wasn't self defense, this is slapping a CHILD. This can't be spun into anything other than what it is. I'm sure all of our elementary educators don't have the previously stated view of teachers being burdened by troubled children. There is more to it than "putting up" with our children until summer breaks rolls back around. Thank you to ALL of the teachers that have dedicated your life to truly wanting to make a difference in a childs life.

We are talking about 5-6 year old kids not teenagers! This is outrageous, I have heard many gripes about this principal but, chose not to believe them this action makes me believe everything I heard was true.

I was raised my whole life in Anadarko and attended school there from preK till 12th. This town is nothing but a black hole. I moved from there for a reason. Its full of mostly drugs and corrupt people. All you hear about is preachers stealing, bankers stealing, drug bust after drug bust, cops getting caught sellin/ doing drugs, and BAD disrespectful kids!! There are SOOO many kids that are ungrateful, undisciplined, and have no respect!! These kids parents don't care enough about them to show them discipline and how to respect others and be grateful for things. Mrs. Walzer is an old school woman who believes in trying to teach kids right from wrong and shows discipline when needed. It won't do anything but make them better adults. My parents whooped my butt when I got out of line & I'm glad they cared enough about me to do so. They taught me to be respectful, grateful, & compassionate; and that there ARE consequenses for your actions. Which is something I am passing to my children. Every generation gets worse and worse. Maybe we should all take Gods advice and put our foot down and be PARENTS!!! "spare the rod, spoil the child"

If you've ever been hit, kicked, bit, etc. by one of these students you know just how powerful they can be. Yes, we're talking about mostly 5-6 year olds but just try stopping one when they're on a rampage. It's not as easy as it sounds.

Agree totally with most of what you say, EXCEPT the way to make it better isn't to run away from the problems then throw stones at it from a safe distance..

From what i understand this child was autistic as well... Those children are extremely strong..I really feel bad for the principal because The child Hit Her and she just reacted. She immediately resigned. I believe she was as shocked as anyone she reacted as she did. Alot of these people on here only see black and white. If they have never dealt with these types of children They havent got a clue!!!!!

I know! I have children in school too. It wasn't the olden days lol! I do understand your frustration and would be pissed also if someone hit my child. I can see also how someone could react without thinking when a kid hit them so hard. She did resign and I do believe she is sorry and mad at herself for what she did. I do think she did the right thing by resigning. Sometimes I think those teachers , etc.. Get to a point where it's time to quit .. Once again I don't blame you for being mad . That was my point on the last post . The teachers we used to have were old hags. Meaner than hell. I'm glad our children have younger teachers these days that still have patience! When they lose patience they need to be gone.

There is an underlying cause of this that we do not know. I highly doubt she walked up to the kid and slapped him/her for no reason. I am sure the kid deserved it.Kids need discipline these days.

Yeah, but 5 and 6 year olds, give me a break. You do not slap children in the face. No matter how much stress your job may be putting on you; and being a professional - no excuse for this type of behavior.

You mothers need to get a grip. Half your kids need their butt's beat. If you taught your kids how to act in public/ school you woul;dn't have a thing to worry about. When I'm in stores or even resturants I'm amazed at how some of your children act and it's a direct reflection upon the sorry parents. I had been slapped, paddled, hit with a ruler and deserved everything I got and my parents agreed. A lot of you parents send your kids to school for the teachers to raise anyway might as well teach them what its like when they get old enough to face reality! Stop your whinning and teach your kids right from wrong before you really have problem's and wonder what happen to little Johnnie and little Betty.

i totally agree... the kids these days have know respect for themselves and its mainly influenced by their parents. if you the its bad to punish your kids when they act up and then defend them if someone else gets on to them for the same thing. i understand that the child in the situation was mentally challenged but i bet that child acts the same way at the house and all the parents do is yell or scream at the child....has anyone every heard the saying "actions speak louder then words???"
