If the speed limit through this area was enforced it might cut down on some of the accidents. The speed limit is 50, however, the average speed is at least 60. And, of course, there's also the third driver back that thinks the yellow light means hurry up because the light going to turn red when the vehicles in front of them obeys the light and prepares to stop. It's not the intersection, it's the drivers.

I drive through this intersection daily, and while I travel at 50-55, cars are still flying past me. Franklin County used to park a deputy in the mediam from time to time, havent seen that in a while now.
On another note, if you are behind a semi and you cant see a traffic signal well enough to react if the light changes, then you are following too close.

I lived in Columbus for 47 years and drove throung this intersection for more than 20 years. It was bad when there was no light and still bad with the light. Perhaps with all the crashes there (and it is a very dangerous intersection with and without the light) the city should look into lowering the speed limits on US23 north and south to 35 MPH (extending the speed limit in the Great Southern shopping center) allowing more time to see the lights. As was pointed out in the article its hard to see the lights in rain and fog, this would give more time to see the light and stop. The speed limit would increase 500' to 1000' south of Rathmel Road.
I really believe the high speed limits on both roads are contributing factors to all the crashes. Whwn a speed limit is 50 MPH you know that people are traveling in excess of 60 MPH which is way too fast for this area. I truly believe that the speed limt shoud be 40 MPH from Williams Road to SR665, south of Scioto Downs. Reduced speed and increased enforcement would cut down on some crashes. People are just going too fast to stop for that single light at the intersection, especially at night.
Just a thought from a former Columbus resident who frequented the area going to Hoover Y Park.

Every intersection is dangerous! Just pay attention and you will do fine! I drive through this one all the time and it is no different with the exception of all those crosses distracting drivers on the side of the road! Quit complaining and learn how to drive!

The flashing lights could do nothing but help. I'm sure their cost is nothing compared to EMT/Police/FD fees accrued from accidents. I can see how some people fail to properly stop when the light quickly changes, but I also know a lot of the time, people turning onto/off of rathmell turn into oncoming traffic without proper distance.... sometimes I'm amazed I have any brakes left from all the times I've had to abruptly stop to prevent hitting someone who's pulled in front of me.

Agree. Stupid drivers on their cell phones. Ban phone use while drivivg and fine the violators like $2,000 or more.

I go through this intersection twice a day, during the afternoon and at night. There is no problem seeing the light, especially at night. It is visable as soon as you get off the 270 ramp southbound. I think the biggest problem is people not paying attention and speed. It's not hard to figure out that when you approach a traffic light, you slow down. Am glad to see the police have been out there checking speed in the afternoon, there is always someone pulled over when I go through there. Would like to see them there at night sometimes, if people can't see the light, you no they won't see the police. This could be a money pot for the city and people have no one to blame but their selves if they get a ticket.

Intersections do not kill, bad drivers kill.
