this is all in good but why not wal-mart? because the land they wanted to buy the mayor wants to sale it at 18 a sq foot and its only worth 5 a sq foot..how about k-mart? I -hop something that will give other jobs besides the oil field. that way there will be jobs to help get these young mothers off well-fare..most of the jobs around here offer no retirement. no insurance.how about something for the kids to do here. all that money spent on that wading pool was a waste..yeah we have a musem once you seen it what else is there to do? go to the sandhills. yeah thats all in good after a few times..golf??? not everyone likes golf..perch pond?? it nice to go have a picnic once and awhile and fish.. not all kids want to fish..come on monahans lets see other things come here ....

I agree with you.... "They say".. they signed a contract with Alco...(I would like to see it..Why is it not posted in the Monahans News? To let the public know.) Not to let a wal-mart in..but, what about a super K-mart? Or a Target?

Who is building these houses (the mayor)?? I would just like to know who all is moving to Monahans?? How many houses are sold.. Are they buying the materials local?? I have seen Fort Stockton growing. They even have a Tractor Supply in town.
SO, How much does it cost to be a country club member and why don't they have that pool going??

SO, How much does it cost to be a country club member and why don't they have that pool going?? the mayor put an ad in other parts of texas for jobs here in monahans and brought about 40 familes down here set them up in new trailors. and now buying up more land for these homes. but you have to work for him,to be able to get one. thats all in good, but where are all these new familes going to shop? exactly like we all do that have lived here for many a year Odessa..as for the contract with alco it was suppose to be up along time ago. and that junk they sale at alco comes from other stores that dont sale. most of the electronics there says referbished.. and sales for higher than wal-mart has it..there is not many middle class homes left to buy in monahans,. they need another apartment complex that id like to see have some class to it. offer nice pool. hot tub apartments with fire places.something that not plain jane..look at all the vacant buildings down town collecting dust and falling apart, the rent on them is way to high..if we had things here to do and have somewhere we can shop we would not have to worry so much about our kids going to odessa and something happening.this new motel they brought in my gosh a night cost you 99.00 and half the things there never work.go by and look at some of the low income housing where is that money going? weeds growed up ankle high. looks terrible..the one behind pizza hut is the worst.some of the people living there are sr citizens. did you see the decorations for christmas? what a joke, not even festive.. we need a change here and it needs to happen now. come on monahans make it known this place needs an over haul.

I vote for a new MAYOR! indeed it is time for a change... and bout those "houses for sale" its not fair that only his employees get to have them. There are many ppl that like small towns like monahans but if there is no DECENT AFFORDABLE place to live here then how are we expected to grow?? i have lived here all my life moved away for some time but i came back now i have a family and i have to live with my inlaws :( because there isnt affordable housing here. apartments or too high for wat they are too..... ok didnt mean to go on and on bout it. I kno that if u live here u kno it already.

Your statement raises two very different issues and meshes them together. Separating them may add weight to your argument.

1) The "there's nothing to do in Monahans" comment. This has been reality for 20 years, and it isn't going to change. Any sort of venture that would attract large groups is going to cost significant money, and the return on investment is hardly promising. Even if someone decided to do it as the ultimate act of altruism and had no profit motive, they'd struggle to break even. If you attract the teenagers, you're going to get the crap that comes with that, and even then you'll only get one of the 5-6 "sects" of teens in the town. The others will avoid it like the plague. If you go after adults, kids won't buy into it and you'll have no marginal business.

There will, quite simply, never be anything to do in Monahans. It's just the way it is.

2) As for the big box retail dilemma, someone at sometime "sold out" to someone else. Why else would turn down a Wal-Mart, with its' outstanding resources and ability to bring lower-to-middle-of-the-road products at a good value, over freaking Alco? It's too bad the community establishment in that town is too gun shy to run against the current political leaders, as someone with a little money and a loud enough mouth could get knock them off in an election. Of course, you wouldn't have the "big money" in town on your side, so you won't be successful in any "outside the box" ventures which the town needs so much. Your tenure would be under a microscope, and the first error will be the last one (see the head football coaching situations in the last 10 years).

It sucks for Monahans, but this is the way it is.

you bring up some good issues voice. but read on the forum teens in monahans.. she brings up what is going on with the teens here today. they have nothing to do. nowhere to go besides drag up and down the drag . cause some trouble.etc. there is so much that can be done. for instance. we bring in a carnival once a year. make it a big thing like a fair that will attract young and old alike.the 4th of july freedom fair, for what its worth.(laughing)they are talking about a SKATE PARK?? UMM HOW MANY KIDS SKATE BOARD? THE INSURANCE ALONE WOULD BE COSTLY.. but when we brought up the perch pond making approvements they said the insurance would be to high. makes no sense,i dont see a skate park being an investment at all..we need something that would put money back not take.and plain and simple MONEY TALKS.. BULL.. you know the rest

and your right there is nothing to do. the mayor has plenty to do for his kids he bought the old movie theater for his kids to play vollyball etc. then put a letter in the paper stating its for his kids use only not the public. thats all in good. as a parent from here maybe we can all get together and do something for the kids of Monahans and put a letter in the paper say for all kids except his.but money talks.

The mayor is a very fair man and most of your assumptions are completly wrong. Ask anyone the Mayor is a great man who has worked extremly HARD for everything he has. He gives back to the community more than his share!

You need to go talk to the mayor in person. Yes he bought the old movie theater and put in a volleyball court and nice seats for watching movies, but it is not only for his kids. If you would go talk to him in person you would discover that some local groups have already asked to use the facilities when they are finished. These groups include senior citizens as well as public school classes. The only reason he said it would not be for public use is that he cannot and will not CHARGE ANY MONEY for its use. How many business people do you know that would open up a movie theater and not charge any money for its use. I don't believe it is in the mayors job description to personally provide recreation for all the citizens of the town! After all that movie theater has not been in use for over 25 years. It had been converted into a residence before he bought it and it still is a residence except for the theater/volleyball court.
Speaking of the volleyball court, the mayors kids cannot make up a volleyball team. He also stated in that news article that it would be used for club volleyball. That means numerous teams consisting of numerous kids, not just his own!
Take the time to find out a little more information before you trash someone!

Ok All you people gripe about unaffordable housing and your blaming your financial problems on people with more money than you...come on now...if you would have gone to college or even graduated high school and you could get a better job than at the allsups maybe you could afford something better to live in....And its Company housing not public housing.

There is nothing there for young people. If you're a retired person, then this is a place for you to live. If you're a person with young children, this is a place for you to live. But if you're a person with teens....run as fast as you can!!! Drugs run like water there, even in the schools. Everyone wants to pass the buck and look the other way. Law enforcement cannot keep up with all if there is not enough cooperation from parents and school officals there. It's not what you know, it's who you know. Our town should be called" Our mayor USA". Everyone wants to gripe about him, but yet he gets voted in every time. So quit your bitching and exercise your vote! Putting in a Wal-Mart is not going to make things better. Look at Pecos. Our resturants are all worn down and looking shabby. Our ONE grocery store TRYS its best. Our city council is a joke.

I think Monahans is a great town, yes i mean it doesn't have a whole lot for kids to do, but it also keeps kids from getting into alot of trouble, usually. It puts us away from the big city atmosphere that others are affected by. And myself being a 19 year old kid, i still like Monahans, It has been very great to Me and my Family through the good times and bad, And about the Mayor. Mr. Cutbirth is a great man, he is really generous with the movie theater and i have been there when groups of kids have come in to use the theater for various events. I even helped host an event. And don't fault him just because he has the money to turn the theater into a private affair, i think it's great that some of the old building here in town are actually being used for something and not just rotting and falling down into the streets

Being a Monahans resident I can honestly say that venturing out and about - East Texas etc... Coming back home to Monahans really does sink your heart. The town is filthy, run-down and ever-aging.

Alco is pathetic - one register open while 5 cashier's are sitting at another closed register looking dumbfounded with a line of customers waiting for a hour. The same goes for our ONE grocery store that charges out the wad for everything. Lines backing up into the frozen isles. The ONLY WAY to avoid this disaster is to go early in the morning when the "older" cashiers are working.

Our children's soccer fields are outrageous - Stickers are every inch you step. Caution your kids not to accidently trip or fall cause you will literally sit there half the game picking stickers out of your childrens legs and hands.

Perch Pond has gone TO HELL - Have you seen ALL THE TRASH floating around. It's AWFUL. Just before you drive in looks half ass decent until you drive down into the pond. I remember when you could actually go there and pass time - but now with all the trash building up - it's disgusting. I feel sorry for the animals living there. It wouldn't be to bad if the citizens got together to clean our ONE POND up!

Food locations - Wow for our GENERIC IHOP/DENNY'S the service isn't all that bad but the hashbrowns - YES I WILL COMPLAIN taste like cardboard.

Yay on getting an Oreiley's - Now Napa can't charge you rediculous prices and won't be going back to return a wrong item cause the casheir's don't know what they're doing.

All these little personal owned business that only stay open for less than a year - Do we really want to buy that hand painted coffee cup??? Or that Hand painted purse??? Some of these businesses WENT OUT OF BUSINESS BEFORE THEY EVEN BECAME A BUSINESS!!!!! So then leaving out town with empty buildings that are falling apart prgressing our town into this run-down ghetto.

Come ON MONAHANS WE SERIOUSLY NEED AN UPGRADE!!!!!
