New Recreation Center

Mayor Daley has scrapped the plan for an expanded city beach and a multi-use community center complex adjacent to the library. This plan was developed thoughtfully with a lot of citizen input to be a city center arena for events and year around recreation. Instead he plans to build a recreation center on the lakefront and sell off the property the city purchased for the community center adjacent to the library. There was a consensus prior to his election that this expanded campus downtown was what was needed for the future of our growing community. He is proclaiming a savings of several million dollars, yet short changing Oconomowoc the facility that will serve our needs for the next 100 years. Yes, these are tough economic times, but in such times the local community becomes all the more important. Oconomowoc needs the expanded lakefront for its growing local events, and it needs accessible spaces and parking that will bring events: expos, dances, weddings, shows, clubs, classes, PEOPLE to the downtown area. I don't know how the city council was convinced to change this plan. Are they so afraid of a tax increase? I don't think people would mind paying another $30-50 a year to have the use of a wonderful event facility downtown. Do others feel the way I do about this? Please post your input and also contact your alderman.

The rec center should stay on the lakefront to accommodate the ice skaters, because it is a prettier more accessible location, and $30-$50 for everybody in the city is a hefty chunk. Especially considering the fact that it would be levied on everybody when only a small proportion of the population actually uses it. I would like to know what the cost would be per person that uses the rec center.
