I wonder if this will wind up in that buffy publication FireNews. Maybe it'll be squeezed between headlines about houses that are total losses because FD took 30 mins to respond and headlines about the new unnecessary trucks that each dept. on LI got. I wonder how long it will be until these wannabe heros get T-shirts made up recounting the block party incident.

McDermott took the fall for his men. Sad that his judgement was flawed when he approached the victim directly. He should have called the OFD's attorney immediately after this incident.

He was a good chief who couldn't control his indians.

"Witnesses who attended the party and testified at the hearings told Newsday that several firefighters held beer bottles as they got off the truck."

You call this news ?????

Throw in a dozen acts of public lewdness, and this incident is nothing more than a typical St. Paddy's Day Parade out in Montauk.

I haven't forgotten the assistance the Vollies gave during the FDNY's time of need. They answered the call.
I don't condone the actions of this group however, let us not forget the color guards, stand-bye, etc.... during the services for our fallen Brothers.

Thank you for the rational and reasonable post. Pissing matches are a waste of time. The bottom line is that we are all here to help each other and that the foolish actions of a few should not reflect on an entire group of people. Just as we responded to help the FDNY in their time of need, they did the same for us during the brush fires in 1995. It's about helping people and getting the job done, no matter who is doing it.

Do not condemn an entire group because of the actions of a few idiots - and there are many of us who agree that this incident should never have happened. The overall good done for the public by both volunteer firefighters and paid firefighters far, far outweighs any isolated embarassing incidents like this.

It’s sad it only takes a few bad apples on an otherwise fine dept. and volunteers no less.
McDermott is taking a fall for his boys, like he should. I wonder if they would do the same for him?

All of the posts by people who have no balls or any idea's. The group on this truck made a bad decision, whatever the case means regarding drinking, I can not say, I was not there. But like the Atty said the "victim" had a broken hand, hmmm, he was at a block party drinking all day, and right off the bat the FD was wrong, where I am sure the FD did do soemething wrong, and should have defused the situation, don't be so quick to judge, and to make these comments about Chief M, is absolutely stupid, you have no idea of what type of guy he was, and he did not follow this truck down the block, but he did show up the next day to smooth things over, and he did take the fall for his Men, He is a leader, and a Hero from a past call, which he saved numerous lives because of his actions that day. Keep your ignorant comments to yourself, these membetrs have served there time for there mistakes, and they are a great department and will move forward past this blemish

YAWN!

It won't make it to FireNews anymore than the article of a doctor robbing the Medicare system would make it into the Journal of the American Medical Association.

30 minutes? Maybe to your house because you're a dick?

Tommy McDermott is a victim too if he took the fall for his men, which I think, knowing him ,he did.
No matter what ,they were wrong, but do not blame all the men of the Oceanside Fire Department for some bad choices some of the men made.
Island park,Freeport,West Hempstead, and I could name a lot more all have men who made bad mistakes,
but remember these are the same men who respond to every thing that goes on in their town and outside of it too. It takes a lot of guts to run into a burning building,or go to N Y when 9-11 happened.
Would you do it????????

So the firemen in question got roudy and whatever. Stupid stuff happens and courts can work it out.

What gets me boiling is all the money they waste on a fire truck race car and competitions. Why do my tax dollars pay for that?

It's funny that Newsday brought this up again. Why don't they follow up with the Coram Chiefs story?? They are still suspended for sticking up for a black fireman who was insulted by an drunk district manager who is buddies with the Board of Fire Commissioners!!!!!!
