<quoted text>Yes Mr Shockley was a policeman too - I think he died of a heart attack, and his wife was killed in a car wreck along with the lady that used to work at city hall at that time. I'm afraid I've forgotten her name.
Vaughan Cozort used to be the town recorder for years and years. City Hall was located where the firehouse is today. The building that is now City Hall used to be a Medical clinic, with the OCL Ambulance Service located next door in a trailer. Time has passed us by too quickly.
Was there a Chet Hawkins too? A policeman?

Chet Hawkins was a constable. He passed away sometime in the late 60's, I believe.

<quoted text>Good ones,I just remembered a good one,the Daniels buildings, you mentioned, the Dollar store was where Nancy's is,now in the lower part mostly where you said the flooring place is was Tuckers General Store.Mrs Daniels owned it but rented that part out. Also Daniels had a hardware store in the building where the libery is.Also there was another funeral home I believe where the lower bank is.It was a long white wooden structure.Just had a flash back.LOL Lugars company store.I have been in it as a child. It was some where around the motorcycle shop that burnt in upper town.LOL I am older than mud.!!
I barely remember Mrs. Daniel's Dollar Store, where Nancy's is now, and it was the entire building at that time. This was the late 60's, just before it closed, then became Blankenships Market in the early 70's. Tuckers was in the building where Oceana Surplus is located now. The very end building. Belonged to Chilton Tucker, who was Mrs. Daniels son-in-law at the time. Then it became Chilton's Furniture before he moved back to Beckley he and Miriam (Mrs. Daniels' daughter) divorced. The funeral home, McDougals, was located in the old Mannings Grocery store, which was located somewhere between where Hardee's and the post office is now. Don't remember that funeral home but my aunt told me about it. Didn't last long. The hardware store where the library is now was Meadows Lumber. The only thing that was every where First Community Bank is now was an old farm house that belonged to the late Lillie Barrett, who was the Mother of the late Jennings Barret that taught math at Oceana High School.

Sylvia's Miners Inn was located in an old wooden building on the property where Westside Pharmacy is now. The Inn was on the street with rental houses behind it. Building was torn down sometime in the late 80's.

I ask this on the Pinevill thread like this one, but didn't get any feedback... I remember a long long time ago Oceana had two movie theatres on main street...the "Midway" which burned up and another one... I have a brain block and cannot come up with it.. Does anyone know the name of the other theatre?
Don't remember the days of two movie theaters in Oceana, but believe my aunt told me once there were two, The Midway and across the street was The Bluebell or Bluebird, not sure, but know the name had blue in it. Hope this helps.

<quoted text>Okay,Tumble town building started out as Riders Clothing store.I think he killed his wife with a hachet,I was very young, but remember people talking about it.The murder that is,but I remember the store saying riders on the window. And Loydes was western auto.Bought a many bicycle bearing there.
To set the record straight on the person that was killed in Rider's Mens Clothing store. The murder happened in 1958 before I was born. The lady that managed the store for Mr. Rider was murdered, not Mr. Rider's wife, and the guy who did the murder was caught. Won't post the name, but that's who was killed. The reason I know this is I remember my uncle talking about the police asking him if he would go to the store as one of 10 witnesses to the investigation. He said it was horrible and I won't go into details here.

Vaughn Cozort was a good man too.
Mr. Shockley was police chief in Oceana in the middle 60's, then later was chief jailer at the jailhouse in Pineville.

Island Creek department store where McDonalds is now......was a Mining company store.
General Stores, the origianl coal mine store in town was owned by Eastern Assoc. Coal or back then Eastern Gas and Fuel. They sold it out to Island Creek and the store was then owned by Island Creek Coal but Eastern employees could still use it. Was never in the store but do remember the old building.

I'm not sure if this is the same thing you are thinking of, but there was a place called Ma's Hut in Oceana, at the bridge going out of town, where the antique store is now. Didn't look that way at the time. My aunt remembered that place and was there in 1947 when she first came here as a young bride. Closed sometime in the late 40's or early 50's, I believe.

I was really little, but I can remember my mom taking me to get a pair of shoes. Bobby Cline owned it and I think it is where Uncle Tom's is now. I may be wrong, I was so young.

You're right about the owner, it was bobby cline. I remember he had a cat in there and I would go try shoes just to see the cat. There was a liquor store near there too, my mom didn't drink but we would buy scratch lottery tickets in there.

My husband found the names for you. Guyan and Midway. If you need to know where they were, he knows that also. Hope that helps...Also I really like you, I read what you write and you crack me up a lot. Thank You...Linda

My neighbor just told me that the other theatre started out as The Bluebell or Bluebird, she can't remember, either, and then it became The Guyan. As she said it was a long time ago and a lot of people may not remember the first name, it was during the war when that theatre came in here.

Here's another place. Anyone remember Lacy McMillion's barber shop in lower Oceana? Was located in a building near Hatfield's General Merchandise. Believe Video Land may be in the building now, not sure, but it was in one of the buildings connected to Hatfield's. Was there from the 50's until he became too ill to work sometime around 1966 or so. He passed away in 1968, that I do know. His daughter Gerry had a beauty shop in the back of the barber shop before she moved it to her home uptown and fnally went out of business.

I love this thread...remember Buttons, Bows and Lace across from the bank and way before that, there was a clothing store in the building beside Buttons Bows and Lace, I think it's a home health business now. Was it called Wades Discount? I saw Wades mentioned on here and couldn't place where it was. I still remember a bathing suit my mom bought me from there...I loved that suit. Remember that house that someone turned into a tanning bed place...it was near the Super America, near that church. It was one of the first tanning bed places to go in and boy was it popular. I also remember the Gibson Girl hair salon, where that lawyer now is (near the park) and my favorite hamburger came from a little fast food place (can't remember the name) that is now a gas station across from Magic Mart. I also remember when Magic Mart was Buddy's Discount. I think the only thing that is still the same is Worrells Exxon.
