Hey was just wondering what's going on , have heard some talk that none of the Senior boys are gonna play this year, so whats the deal with that. I just hope that we still have a fairly good team, cause i love those Renegades, and will be there to back and support them all the way.

Westside hasnt had a good season since Hop left them high and dry. Cook is a good assistant but no head coach. he's had what four years to prove himself now and the talent has been there. he just dont know how to get the best out of them.

at least Hop knew how to do that much and make his teams contenders year in and out.

this season it's gonna be much worst than yrs before I believe. looking at the schedule, there is a lot of tough teams on it. from Wyoming East to Bluefield, to even Scott and Pikeview, i do believe. not to mention Westside is back in the Coal Classic.

i'll go ahead and say they'll be lucky to win 8 games this season and that's a long stretch.
plus not to mention even if we have what would be considered a decent/good season, Westside is in a region with the like of Wyoming East, Oak Hill, Bluefield, and Pikeview.

In my honest opinion i think Wyoming East/Oak Hill are among the top 3 if not top 2 in AA basketball this year.
hate to say it, but looks like another long year of basketball at Westside :-\

You know you do have other players that CAN play basketball other than those SENIOR boys. I really hate that they aren't playing this year, but in years to come that may be something that they look back on and regret. But it is there business. Best of Luck to Westside and you don't only support a team when they are winning, you support them when they are down also. That makes a true FAN. To the Senior football players, wonderful year and very proud of you. You seem to be a very good group of kids at that school. Good role models for upcoming kids from Middle Schools & Grade Schools. You have nothing to be ashamed of. Good year!

I'm hoping that those seniors don't play. They are a good group of football players and only decent basketball players.

The only senior that is definitely playing is the one that matters - Big Nate.

My reasoning for this hope is so that the younger guys can get experience without me having to listen to the senior's parents bitch in the stands about playing time. The schedule is softer this year than the previous years and I think Coach Cook planned it that way.

I've only missed a few games (both home & away) since Westside basketball started and I'm not planning on stopping now.

I hope we have a winning season and remain positive that we have the talent we just need to use it wisely.

You are wrong on both of your statements. Westside was 18-4 the first year under Nick Cook. They lost to Wyoming East by 5 points in the sectionals and East went on to be state champions that year. Last year Westside played 5 AAA schools. The schedule is a lot weaker. Did Coach Cook forget how to coach the last 2 years? Or was it lack of talent?

To be a good team you need talent and coaching and I think Westside has that. I think they will be better than people are expecting.

yeah ok, he inherited a good team from Hop, I mean with Blankenship, E-bay, among a few others they shoulda went 18-4, shoulda won the sectionals and went on....but again I think it was a fact of getting out coached.

and no there's been a fair amount of talent the last 2 yrs or so. e-bay was as good as any other talent that's came through those halls.

as for the Schedule is a lot weaker, not really. We play East two possibly three times, Scott twice, Bluefield twice, a possible match up with Oak Hill in the Coal Classic, Man twice who will be tough. It's not that weak.
but schedule isn't gonna matter much, we gotta beat the likes of Oak Hill or Wyoming East to get out of our region, least we forget about Bluefield, Pikeview, and Shady who could surprise some this season.

It's just very frustrating to see a program that use to be so good year in and out be so bad now. but hopefully with the Tilley Twins and a few others we can see something happen.

oh just my opinion here but If Big Nate is the only senior coming out, unless he's gotten any better from last yr (which from watching him in football, i doubt it) then I hope he sits too.
funny thing is football was suppose to be his better sport or so I heard?

this comment is for "a fan". Good Luck on your basketball season because whether you admit it or not you need those seniors to play. They are the same boys who beat the great players at wyoming east in jr high. Very talented in several sports! If all the seniors were to play the bench would be full and Coach Cook could alternate players all night long. Lack of respect and confidence in the players is the reason why they are not playing. As far as hearing "the senior parents" bitch in the stands. They aren't the only people that complain in the stands and if you don't like it then don't sit around them. Boy isn't that simple!!!!
To the underclassman please know that I am in no way saying that they are not talented ballplayers. I just wanted to say that people don't need to get on here and bash the seniors and talk crap about them because they're not playing. They are a great group of kids and athletes. They give no problems to anyone and I don't think they deserve to hear the crap on here about them. If you want to know why they're not playing, ask them I'm sure they'll tell you.

The buses are paid for with the money that the BOYS bring into their games. They get 1/4 of the money that is paid at the door and they pay for their buses with that money. If the girls want a coach bus then they can buy one with the money they make at the door.

this is a very good point.
I know several kids over the years who coulda been good players but refused to play basketball cause of Cook.
and to add to your point if i may, back when Hop coached kids may have hated his guts at times but they respected him and what he did and accomplished as a coach.
Cook fails to have the respect of the kids and when you dont have the respect it's hard to get the best outta ya kids.

I agree the school and team needs our support regardless of the outcome. Yes, East may have won but honestly who else in the state in AA had anything, are they that good, or others that weak?

I don't need them to play at all - it doesn't matter to me. I just think with them or without them the results will be the same so I'm thinking about the future. I didn't bash anyone but the parents - you must be one since that seemed to strike a nerve with you.

So you know - I have asked three of them. Two gave me the reason I was expecting but the third one gave a reason I would have never thought of.

18-4.....Are you sure?
I don't remember Nick Cook going 18-4.
What year was it, so I can look it up?
Thanks.
