Exile will headline this year’s Wyoming County Labor Day Celebration.

Together again, the original band members — guitarists J.P. Pennington and Les Taylor, bass player Sonny Lemaire, drummer Steve Goetzman, and keyboard player Marlon Hargis — will be performing all their hits.

Besides their 1978 “Kiss You All Over,” there are 10 other No. 1 songs, according to Bill Heaberline, the promoter, including “Woke Up in Love” and “She’s A Miracle.”

“This will be an all hits show,” Heaberline emphasized.

The group will also be performing the hits band members have written for other performers, including “The Closer You Get” and “Take Me Down,” both recorded by Alabama; “Heart and Soul,” performed by Huey Lewis and the News; “It Ain't Easy Bein' Easy,” recorded by Janie Fricke; and “Just In Case,” recorded by the Forester Sisters.

Pennington’s song-writing talent earned him a BMI Writer of the Year award and recognition as one of BMI’s Top 100 Writers of the Century. His music has also been recorded by Kenny Rogers and other artists.

Pennington first organized The Exiles, as the band was first known, in 1963 in Richmond, Ky. A couple of years later, they were touring with the Dick Clark Caravan of Stars.

With members coming and going through the years, the group has had their biggest success in country music.

The free concert is scheduled Monday, Sept. 3, at 7:45 p.m. in Pineville’s Palisades Park, according to Mayor Tim Ellison.

The concert will be followed by a gigantic fireworks display, synchronized to patriotic music, Heaberline said.

“We’ll have a new, bigger stage this year,” explained Mike Goode, of Pineville Volunteer Fire Department, which is coordinating the annual celebration.

This year’s celebration will again include crowd favorites such as carnival rides, Sunday church service and gospel sing on the courthouse steps, along with the annual car show which will be held downtown due to the construction of the elementary school on the football field site, Goode said.
