Thanks

The field is like a damn KY Derby.

Matt McDonnell is the incumbent, R, don't vote for him, he's been alderman in Ward 2 for 16 years and has totally f**ked it up (see thread on "Ugly Boat Storage...") by doing favors for his friends. He is spiteful too. Works for Bill Holmes at the Coliseum.

Doug Denehie is also running. Was on the Planning Commission, got kicked off by the Mayor and Matt because he wouldn't support their pet condo projects. That's a damn good reason to vote for him. I think he's a R too, don't know. Doug has a huge family, ask about him. Despite what was said about him in another thread, he is not a racist, that was the spiteful pro-Matt buds twittering.

Jeff Glouner is a fellow who recently moved here from Las Vegas, I heard, about 4 years ago. He's damn cute but a condo developer so he's probably pro-condo but I don't know this for a fact. He's a D.

Bill Lucas, a really smart guy, used to be a college professor, retired now. Lives on Front Beach, doesn't like the condo-smart code bullShit either, a good reason to vote for him as well. As far as I know, he's not part of the good ol boy cabal at all, would be fair. He's also R.

And, get this, there's someone else running too, just saw the signs last week. My pick is anybody-but-McDonnell. Whoever breaks out of the primaries will get my vote, even if it's Glouner. Time to end the favor for a friend development in Ward 2 and get someone who represents the people who actually live there. Please vote in this election and don't let the Villa Maria swing the election, it always goes for McDonnell, as he takes credit for all the stuff there, like the flowers the casino paid for and that dangerous light, I've seen so many people run that light it's like a deathtrap for senior citizens.

Fort Bayou Belle, you should try and meet each candidate. Taking someone's opinion and voting based on that alone may not be smart. Mr Denehie was not reappoited to the planning comm. by any of the alderman. The racist comments that he made were seen by the editor of the Ocean Springs Record. Dr. Lucas has sued the city twice and lost both times. Mr. McDonnell has seved 4 terms and has won easily each time. He also seems to have many yard signs in peoples yards for someone that "fanny" thinks is so terrible. As for his support at the Villa Maria, why don't you talk to some of their residents. They like him alot because he doesn't forget them like many other elected officials do. I know I use to have a family member that lived there. Why don't you take more time to find out for yourself and not trust this blog for facts. They are few and far between in here. I don't know who the other candidates are.

I would never take someone's "opinion" as my voting compass, but I will consider what others have to say about the candidates.

I realize I know 1 of the candidates and KNOW that Glouner is NOT an option for me. He is a developer with many commercial properties and "I" feel it is a conflict of interest.

I was curious who Glouner was. A card was in my door and it says he is for smart code. That is a code name for commercial business in my neighborhood. If he is in commercial real estate, that would explain alot. My neigbor had to remove his yard sign that he just stuck in their yard without permission. I heard he has done this in several other yards. I see his signs in vacant lots and city right of ways. This is starting to make me wonder.

Fanny is right on in my book. She seems to have Matt's number exactly right. He used to do a good job but now, just takes care of his friends and ignores most of the voters in his ward. He's become just another "political animal." Anybody but Matt is my slogan.

He must have alot of friends. He has signs everywhere in his ward. they seem to be in peoples yards not in empty lots.

James, you can't believe the editor of the OS Record, she is Matt's tool, she used to work for him at the Coliseum and maybe still does.

Bill Lucas did not "sue the city", that's more of what has been said is pro-Matt spitefulness.(He talks like that too, he told a friend of mine he did not reappoint a person to something because they "sued the city", which was not true.)Dr. Lucas appealled a decision of the City he thought was very bad, yet ANOTHER condo project near him. MS law gives every citizen 10 days to appeal a bad decision of the City to a local court, it's not a "lawsuit", it's your right. He got tossed out of court on a procedural error I think, not that the project was good for people living near it, it probably wasn't. No doubt Matt and the city lawyer fought him tooth and nail with your money.

You bet Matt has a lot of friends, in 16 years you can do a lot of favors. 16 years is too long. Give someone else a chance and see how many condo projects, obnoxious businesses and huge legal fees we don't have in Ward 2 after that.

Oh, and the other guy running is Perry Guice. Don't know a thing about him but he gets my vote for not being a 16 year despot running a fiefdom by bullying people who don't kiss his butt and siccing his free lawyers on them, paid for by YOU.

I believe Dr. Lucas also sued the city over the yacht club building a marina back in the mid 90's. He lost that one at the supreme court level. Mr McDonnell has done a good job as alderman and I will be voting for him. All of your anti Matt rhetoric is not changing my mind or my friends and relatives. The more people try to smear him, the more people are turned off by these negative campaign tactics. Matt is strong and is not intimidated by people that threaten to sue. He is not going to ride the fence. It appears to me that he won't do what you want him to do. As for him reappointing someone that sues the city, I wouldn't reappoint them either. So far, all of the cases that have been settled in court, have gone in favor of the city. He must be smart enough to understand the law and which side of it to be on. The last time I counted it takes at least 4 alderman to decide anything. Someone must agree with him for all of these things to happen.

Why can't there be a debate between the Ward 2 candidates?

Inquiring minds got to know.

Too much effort has been focused on the mayoral debates. The mayor works for the board and they make ALL the decisions. The mayor doen't even get a vote in this town. Aldermen debates are what is needed.

2 aldermen dont even have opponents. Not sure which. But those two guys right now are pretty powerful individuals if you ask me. Since aldermen call the shots and they are automatically back in office the next 4 years they are in a very influential position.

I agree with Jake. He has been there for Ward 2 for years. I know to many people that really like him and are supporting him. I hear Denehie is kinda creepy when you talk to him for any length of time. I dont know the others and don't think they have a chance to unseat a guy that has been there and done so much for so many.

I think Matt will win too, but there could be some comedic value to a debate.

James, the city lost the impact fee case and lost it bigtime, they spent at least a quarter million bucks in "consultant's fees" and in attorney fees and lost, plus they had to pay back all the fees collected, with interest.(They also lost a case about that marbleworks springs thing, can't remember it well).

I tried to explain to you that people don't "sue the city", they all have a right of appeal of city decisions that affect their rights and their property values. "Democracy requires judicial supervision to thwart the excesses of elected officials", and boy does ol Matt have some excesses, he's bloated with 16 years of them.

This is why we have three branches of government, duh, they check and balance each other. Didn't you learn that in high school? It's your right to protect yourself against the "favor for a friend" mentality here in Ward 2, but Matt will punish you for exercising your rights, how dare you question HIM?

I see McDonnell is still voted the dumbest alderman. Yes, a debate would be fun, there are now 5 candidates, let's see which one is the stupidest for ourselves!

Dr. Lucas lost both times he appealed. The city was correct in their determination. If you call punishment not reappointing someone that you disagree with, then all of the alderman are guilty. Not one single alderman voted to reappoint Mr Denehie to the planning board. Some appointments are split decisions. I believe your "favor for a friend" mentality is called politics. Just wait and see who is appointed to the openings on the city boards when the new board takes office. I bet it will be somones friend or supporter. I guess that won't be a "favor for a fiend" at work. Your logic is one sided.
