Just heard Big John will be removed from life support at 5 a.m. Monday. There is no brain activity and unfortunately his injuries were just too severe.

Any word on Big John? Hopefully this kid will get what he deserves. From what I've heard, he's nothing but trouble anyway

Big John would be the first to disagree with what you said about "this kid". We dont know the facts. That will be presented to a jury. John would have never gone along with that revenge and payback crap. He was way too intelligent and kind of heart.

John had many friends from many walks of life and any who knew him were truly blessed. Most of us know his family and close freinds were very kind and passive, but lets remember, we all handle loss differently. I too, hope "this kid" gets what he diserves. But that is in hands much bigger than ours.

John "Buster" Whitehouse passed away early this afternoon following the removal of the life support machine. I remember Buster as such an easy going, friendly guy who would not hurt a fly. While what "your friend" says is true about Buster's mannerisms, that is not how some of his grieving family feels about this situation. Buster did not deserve this and had so much to live for. Ryan Odom took away a friend, a dad, and a family member from folks that cared very much for him.

First I hear John was a hero. He pushed Jason out of the way of being hit. I believe this is so very posible being who he was. I also hear that Jason feels horrible. He should not. A) he did nothing wrong but his job. b) if this is true, John felt Jason was important enough to protect. c) Hopefully, Jason will do something great with his life to honor John. John will be greatly missed. I always hear how John has come to someone's rescue, lent an ear, etc. I hope that we can all honor John by doing the same.

I want to extend my deepest sympathy and share with his son who answered my call tonight...when I called tonight I had no idea what had occured...and instead of thinking of yourself...you thought of me...you asked me if I was sitting down and you shared with me what had happened.

Your family is in my prayers...please let me know if there is anything I can do...John and I were always there for each other and I will be there for you.

Someone told me that this is not the first felony charge for this Ryan Odom kid, and that he was out on bond for some other charge when this (totally preventable)accident occurred. My prayers are with John's family, but also with this kid's family - stupid kid has no clue what he has done to John's family or his own.

I am asking for your help at a time like this to understand what happened...I am getting bits and pieces from the comments everyone is sharing and the articles in the paper. Could someone please email me at nbundschuh@mirbeau.com and share with me what they know. For those of you who had John in your life everyday...you were truly blessed. John & I had a very special friendship/love for each other that withstood the test of time and the miles between us. From the first time we met in GITMO in 1994 to our last rendevous in Lexington, Kentucky in August of 2007, when I delivered a potter's wheel to him. I know many of you by name and the stories John shared with me so now I am asking for your help...please help me to understand what happened.

I am so very sad to hear about John's death. I know in some small part what his friends and family are going through, having lost two dear friends of mine to drunk drivers. The only way that future tragedies will be prevented is by the *harshest* penalties possible for those found guilty by a court of law, and the highest possible bails for such offenders in the pre-trial period. Here is but one example of what can happen when someone is 'let off easy' on a first offense: http://wkrg.com/news/article/teen_charged_wit... http://www.ab c3340/news/stories/0907/453293 .html

I agree. This kid had been in trouble many times before and it's about time it caught up with him. It's sad that it had to involve taking someone's life, but maybe now he will be held accountable for his actions. Does anyone know if he is going to be charged with murder or manslaughter?

I didn't know John very well but have many friends who did and I knew that he was a very special person. One who gave of himself to help others and was one of the most gentle people they know. This has affected so many people all over the coast. My prayers are with his family in their time of grief.
Someone I know also knows the young man that hit John. Accident or not he never should have been behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated and from what I understand this is a normal occurance for this young man. I believe that he should be held fully accountable for what he has done. He is very young and unfortunatly I among many others, do not believe that he will learn anything from what has happened, and that he is liable to do it again if given the chance. He needs a LONG time to think about what he has done and to seek treatment for his addictions. I never have believed in one life taken for another, but I do think he should be sentenced and treated accordingly.

This kid has been given so many chances in the past and it hasn't helped him one bit. He doesn't respect anyone or anything. The best thing for him is to sit in prison and rot! He does what he wants, when he wants and never thinks about the consequences of his actions.

I know Odom personally. He is an incorrigible individual. "Sociopath" is not too strong a term.

Our best hope is that Odom will be removed from society.

Bitter blessing, John's death. Isn't it.
