City employees told to stay away from Ocean Springs mayoral debate

During the aldermen's forum which preceded Tuesday night's Ocean Springs mayoral debate, Ward II incumbent Matt McDonnell praised the work of city employees and scanned the audience to see if any were present, then noted he saw none. Full Story

Somebody in McKays camp should have sent the Walkers a memo to please stay away from the debate that he paid good money for.Are things so tight with legal fees and other defense expenses that they came for the chicken dinner? Nope, they are true blue Mckay supporters. They must feel they are going to win together or go down together. I hope the Walkers are back in church this morning like they have been the last few weeks. The family that prays together still can't stay together in the federal penal system. May God help them and their associates.

Shelly Ferguson should be fired tomorrow morning. Rights were violated in a big way.If i worked for the city i would already have an attorney working on this. This goes back to leadership in the city. Like i have said i don't care for either canidate.

I do not think employees of any city, state or federal governments are allowed to participate in campaign functions in any way. This was clearly a campaign rally paid for by one candidate for his benefit. Fried chicken dinners were given away to entice people to come by this same candidate. Also this was not the only access city employees had to view this venue because it was in the newspapers and on local TV-Radio. This is all a manufactured dispute to make it appear all of the City employees do not like the current Mayor and wanted to rush to hear McKay. Just more BS from his side, simply put

The Mississippi Press has obtained a series of emails between the Ocean Springs Civil Service Commission, city department heads and City Clerk Shelly Ferguson in which Ferguson advised city employees to not attend the debate, despite an opinion from the Civil Service Commission which said attendance would not violate state law. This was a debate between to canidates not a political rally.People that live and pay taxes were denied their rights to an open meeting. This is about rights

How many "debates" are you aware of that allowed one candidate to buy everybody dinner? Or that was paid for by one candidate? This is about as crazy as saying "This is not a birthday party because we did not have a cake".

I have been to several when one canidate pays for one and the other pays for the next. that is not the point. If you pay taxes in a city or county you have the right to listen to what the canidates have to say.Just like you have a right to vote.I don't give a damn about either canidate. I believe neither or qualified. It does concern me when you have been told it is not a violation but, you do it anyway

The people serving the food wore John McKay shirts (see Sun Herald online coverage). Mr. Kaufman openly supports Mr. McKay, admits in e-mail that he broke Civil Service rules by asking and encouraging his employees to go but nothing will happen to him. Civil Service Commissioner that made the ruling has Mr. McKay sign in their yard. Sounds like City Clerk was trying to help protect employees from cocerion.

I wondered why McKay didn't serve fish. Maybe he thought that if the city employees came there would not be enough fish to go around. So he had chicken. Then the city employees didn't go so there would have been enough fish. A disaster for McKay. I mean if he can't answer the question "chicken or fish" while he's sitting in Bill Walker's back pocket, how are you going to handle the job of mayor.

It is obvious to most this is another created distraction for the benefit of John McKay. Most of the city employees do not even live in Ocean Springs. They cannot afford it.
