There are drugs in Prison due to a lack of will to stop them getting in. Hughes should never have been there as his offence was not one where the intent was to cause harm. Those who do set out to harm will probably be those who are chiefly responsible for this added £cost.

Western justice and law and order measures are useless. Arguably, they are dangerous. Many of these individuals will be let back on the streets without proper supervision. There are ten million crimes in England and Wales yearly that 100,000 people are capable of committing, but professors tell us that recidivism is not the problem.

Sentencing is in chaos. 8 years for rape for instance makes no sense at all. 75% of men would never rape someone if it was legal and the ones who do commit the offence are not likely to be deterred by 8 years in prison, even if that meant 8 years and not 4 or less.

Many people have learned quite rightly the need for an inclusive society. They have failed to balance this for the need for exclusion in some circumstances. Some do not grasp the significance of intentions and crime. The public understand that the intervention must fit the individual. Not all politicians and very few media editors understand this and, although they realise 'punishment does not work', they do not undderstand it has its place and what role it should play. Nor do they realise crime can vary even from one block to another. They just follow statistics they do not understand.

So called British 'criminologists' think that poverty in Britain causes crime. They each write the same thing roboticly. The truth is that crime causes poverty.

A £6m wing was opened for new inmates; £10,000 in 2003 and many of these people are unemployable, sometimes through no fault of their own, such as learning disabilities. It costs about £550 per week to keep someone in prison.
