Metra Retired Employee

Please support the replacement of Mr. Alex Clifford. I recently retired from Metra due to his mis-management and intimidation of employees who are not on board with his personal agenda. He has created a very stressful work environment. As he states in his interview with Rick Wronski, he has not hired any political requests. However, he has brought in friends and consultants from California and is the subject of numerous hiring improprieties, signing off on many promotions and allowing the creation of several senior positions for employees who were rewarded for their loyalty to former Deputy Executive Director, George Hardwidge. His cuts in manpower is also jeopardizing the safety of Metra's operation.

I believe you missed the whole point of the post you responded to. They did not say that the workers hate Alex. By the tone of your email, as well as how you feel about your fellow co-workers is a validation of just how low the morale is...I believe the previous person who posted explained themselves and their thoughts in a professional manner.

DEAR Metra Board Members

I hope you are awhere that Mr. Clifford has violated numerous unions contracts throughout Metra and any cost savings which he has shown you the past 2 years is a ghastly over inflated number. In just the past year my Union alone has been forced to filed over 100 grievances do too blatant contract violations. He has used his team of lawyers to manipulate the verbage of our Union contract to satisfy his short term goals in your eyes. The grievance process buys him time so his cost savings spreadsheet looks better to the board members. Arbitrators will soon side with our legal binding contract and the flood gates will open. The money will rain down from 547 W. Jackson street and be given back to the Union families he took it from. I don't care if he stays or goes, I just don't think taking advantage of your working force for personal gain is the direction Board Members ever invisioned when they hired a new CEO.

Under the current senior management Metra is going down hill fast. Mechanical delays are on the rise, customer service is horrible and fares are outrageous. I feel that not only the CEO needs to be replaced, but also all previous senior level management who was in place when Pagano was CEO.
Change the senior level management like the county boards replaced the board members...until then, it will continue to be the same old Metra!

I am currently an employee of Metra who is retiring next month after 30 plus years of service. I've worked with Alex closely for the two years he has been CEO and he is running this agency to thin and the people he is bringing in have no railroad experience or knowledge. We will soon have an agency run by people who don't know how to run a railroad, if he stays. The Board MUST do the right thing and get him out ASAP for the sake of the agency. Employee Morale is at an all time low and he is holding vacant positions open to save money and make it look as though he is running the agency with a reduced workforce saving Metra and the tax payers money' when in fact, many things aren't being done that should be. Things are being addressed in priority order and he has created a very stressful working environment.

I retired because Metra employee morale was at an all time low. Those still there tell me it has only gotten worse. Many top level managers saw their ideas thrown on the scrap pile because they weren't either Mr. Pagano's or Mr. Clifford's ideas. Metra used to have a great Media Relations department under Chris Knapton and a great Marketing Department under Jim Bonistalli. Unfortunately one is long deceased and the other hamstrung by those who don't know what they are talking about.

I resigned after being with Metra for over 4 years. Alex Clifford has claimed the class & comp study was to elevate current employees where they should be and to be able to attract new talent with a competitive salary. What a lie that was. Nobody in the IT Department is compensated fairly. As of June 6, 3 of the 8 IT technicians have left Metra for jobs that compensate them fairly. It's a shame because Metra is is crumbling fast...
Glad to be gone!!!
