My name is Tom Groendal. I just moved to Portland in late August and now I am teaching a couple of classical Japanese martial arts, Shindo Muso Ryu Jojutsu and Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu as group exercise programs (free for Y members) of the Beaverton Hoop YMCA.

I am teaching Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu every Tuesday 7:30-9:00 PM and Shindo Muso Ryu Jojutsu every Wednesday, 7:00-8:30 PM.

I am looking forward to working with some conscientious folks from the Portland/Beaverton area on passing down these martial arts that I learned over a ten year period in Japan.

Shindo Muso Ryu is the art of the short staff. In this art, we use a weapon that is can be used to thrust, strike or pin, but our better-armed opponent has a sword, representing a razor-sharp Katana.(We use a wooden sword in practice.)
Within the paired Kata of Shindo Muso Ryu, we use the flexibility of the Jo to overcome the inherent advantages of a blade wielding opponent. This requires precise timing, some out-of-the-box thinking and using just-the-right solution for each situation. In order to perform these Kata with strong intent the practitioner with the jo (Shijo) must dominate their opponent not only in technical prowess, but psychologically and in strength of spirit. That might take a while to achieve, but I speak from experience when I say it's a fascinating journey.

Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu is the original "Aiki" art. In this art of traditional Jujutsu kata, rather than imposing our will on our opponent by breaking through their intent with direct conflict or brute force, we accept their intent and instead move our own body to achieve victory. This art includes sophisticated throws and joint locks and strikes. It offers a rich reserve of technical knowledge to learn.
I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do. Falls will be taken on high quality tatami style mats to prevent injury.
I particularly recommend Daito Ryu to people who are practitioners of Aikido and might be interested in the historical roots of their art or others simply looking for some exercise that will use equal parts body and mind and also offers some powerful applications for unarmed combat.

Anyone interested in joining this practice can become a member of the Beaverton Hoop YMCA for $36 per month and have access to all practices, or can purchase day passes at $7 and join our classes.
