Thanks everybody for the info. The wrestler was Warnie Shermberk.I found out from a woman who dated him.My interest is very high in these murders because of some things this lady talked about before over the last 20 years. She died recently and I am pretty convinced something in her family was very evil.I can't shake it and must keep investigating this. The name of the man whom was in the navy and the body parts were found in his bag.Does anyone know if his real name was Ben.I think the cops and the guy that found his body on Gauley Mt. are the only ones who know this and possible a couple other people. They use ficticious names in the books. It was the road that turns into WOAY that most of the victims had last been seen or had a connection too?

These murders are really haunting me.My friend that passed away was from oak hill. She was 77.The things she talked of and my intituiton are driving me crazy. She dated the wrestler and said he had been questioned at one time, but cleared.Did your cousin go to the matches at WOAY back in the day?

the case i am talking about took place in the early 70's. between spring 1973 and fall 1975. the guy that was thought to possibly be the mad butcher was simon chaple. he was arrested for taking a sledgehammer to laird memorial hospital because they wouldn't give him a job as a doctor. the case i am referring to was a decade later. mom told me that there were some disapearences in the area at that time. the police went into this hermit's house and they found body parts cooking on a stove and and at least one body hanging in another room. this was in the gauley bridge area. anyway the body was of one of the missing people.mom said some of the cops went to pieces at the scene and some got pretty pukered. this has nothing to do with the mad butcher.

I've been looking for updated information on this story for years. I was raised in the Ansted, Gauley Bridge area and my father worked for Wallace and Wallace funeral home in the 60's and 70's. He was also friends with several state troopers. They weren't allowed to talk about it much but I remember many nights spent by these men and my father at the kitchen table trying to figure the case out. They thougth they were closing in on the killer at one point but he comitted suicide before he could be arrested. Two of the troopers who were my fathers best friends nearly lost their minds over what they found and the things that they saw during their investigation. My father had been in the funeral business for years and had seen many, many tragic things but this bothered him beyond anything he had seen before. He still will not talk about it to this day. Sadly, both state troopers have since passed away so there's no way to know what information they did.

Ludy Trump was who I've always heard had something to do with my Dad's death. Only him and the men and women with him would know anything

i remember a few things about it. i remember a head of a person was found near the first trussle of the train track between minden and thurmond and one was blowen to pieces in minden but they said that he killed himself .But people link it to the butcher. The first person killed was i think his name was myers or something like that . he was mentally challenged and every one knew him and he trusted everyone. Thats the one they found over the mountain cut up into several pieces i think it might have been bad off mountain. everyone had thoughts of who it was even blamed a wrestler cant think of his name but he came on tv and offered a 10,000.00 to the butcher to meet him face to face. there where a couple more people found i think one lived in scarbro . he was in the army and was home on leave and was last seen thumbing a ride from the top hat near woay.the other lived in an apartment above quick lunch. hoped this helped out some what
My Dad was Sgt. James Lee Haynes we had just gotten home from Germany on leave had not seen his parents for yrs. Decide to hitchhike to see them for Christmas. After coming half way around the world to see his family, someone killed him less then 20 miles from where he grew up... I've always have been told it was a I won't call a man;animal maybe by the name of ludy trump.

One of the guys he got was a rail road worker names Slick Gwinn also the mad butcher has a last name of I think laird, he is a uncle to our past sheriff, he escaped from a mental ward around the sheriffs second tem and the oak hill and surrounding police had warnings posted to them to be on the look out, the butchers family owned laird hospital in montgomery and he faild out of medical school and thats what drove him mad, he died around 15 or 20 years ago after they recaptured him,I saw the actual teletype that the sheriffs dept got at the old fayette county jail.

Curious...the name was Warren not Warnie...I also don't think you have the spelling correct for the last name. It seems to me it was more like Sheranbeck. Warren Sheranbeck. All I can remember is how terrified we were of him when we were growing up. I can remember my friends and I hiding in a little building because we saw his car coming up the dirt road where we were playing. It was in the woods and we really got scared and it was all we could do to keep from crying. We didn't want him to hear us. He was really creepy and we were only 7 years old at the time but still had enough sense to be afraid of him. Of course at that age, we had not heard the rumors of him being the Butcher.

But it was a laid from the old Laird memorial hospital which is now montgomery hospital, I think he failed out of medical school and went a little crazy, and of course it was covered up as people did then because the Laird family was a big money name at the time

one guys name was Slick Gwinn he worked for the rail road and lived here in Oak Hill, I think this is the guy that they never found his head or body cant remember, it was in the book also The guy that was supposed to have done it and it was covered up because his family owned laird memorial Hospital in Montgomery and in the late 80's or early 90 this same guy escaped from the mental hospital hat he had been in since the 60's and was reported to may be headed this way, they even notified the sheriffs dept, state police and oak hill pd, this was not told around fayette county because of who it was and who the sheriff was that is related to him, they later found him in ohio and returned, he died a few years later. Now knowing you oak hill topix people, this was not a jab at a past sheriff I just wanted to pass it along as a person who heard it first hand

My family was the last people to see Mike Rogers alive at the corner of Main Street and Gatewood Ave. We went to the old Gannons Esso to get water as we lived on Salem Road by the Dilly's who were Mike's foster family and we got our water at the Esso station. We were going to give him a ride home when we got back but he was not there. He was found in a duffle bag over Gauley Mountain all cut up with his transistor raidio in with him. Sad, as he was mentally challenged and wouldn't hurt a thing. I think I was about seven then and I would love to see these murders solved in my life time as they have affected my nerves my whole life.

I know this doesn't go with anything that everyone els thinks but my grandmother has lived in oakhill her whole life and she knew this doctor named nunarni and a woman who worked with him who's last name was Blake but when the murders stopped both nunarni and blake left the country.
