I am thinking abount starting a new gym in one of these area's. Look this company is a great gym franchise I have spoken to them several times I what some feedback. It will have a tanning area, personal trainners ( from open to close)3 hot tubs, free daycare (while you work out) physical therpy, HIGH OXGEN TRAINING, cross fit, a fitness bar, self defence classes and alot of work out equipment.
I use to be a NEW YORK COP for 10 years, I moved to fayetteville in 2000.I tried going to a local gym in the area the equipment gets used so much they are not working that great due to no rest. I then went to YMCA and stared working out and teaching defence classes and I found out there is alot of locals that go over there to workout and some great trainners that what to be treated better.

When I lived in New York I use to love watching local high school kids play sports and watch them go to big name colleges and I would love to be part of that and I know where it starts In the gym so I would give a big discount to kids and have free memberships to coaches and free weight trainning classes to coaches and the students.

I what to help I have talked to several people in the area that would love to get in shape, I have gone to the local walking areas in the area and just watch and can't beleive what I seen, I seen more people walking for fitness in one day than I did in NEW YORK. I have watched fayetteville and oak hill play football, basketball, and baseball and I see more heart and great ball players they are not in shape. The safety is a big issue to me I do not what anybody to fill unsafe. I came to WV to retire i spent 10 years as a cop in New York 20 years working in ELMRA MAXIMUM PRISON in NEW YORK and the last 10 years I help design several states self defense systems that are still being used today in the correctional system. I am trained in well rounded wrestling, clinch fighting, and kick boxing. I want woman to fill good abount going to the gym useing all the equipment so this is what i am going to do put a hot tub and a steam room in the womans and mens locker room. I will also have a CO-ED AREA. I what all types of equipment so you can decide what you like.

I think this sounds like a great idea depending on how much the monthly membership fees are going to cost. There is already a gym in Oak Hill (Active Fitness) and personally I think they charge way to much (they are a small facility). Good luck to you if you open your gym. I'll watch for it.

Oak Hill already has a gym that offers all that stuff. I went there for many years and quit a few months ago. I was just burned out on it, the group classes turned into Zumba everyday and the Crossfit program is just too expensive and much too intense. They always have trouble keeping instructors and have a high turnover with employees.

Personally I would like to see something different come to this area. Something that caters to a wide range of fitness levels and age groups. I think that the current gym needs some good competition.

I agree with you "former gym rat" thats why I what something new to the area. Safty is a big deal I what woman to come to the gym and enjoy it, I found out 80% of woman take classes due to not whating guys watching them. If I have a big enough area and enough machines and weights most of the time guys stay in there area, I also notice most places have just a co-ed area and they doun't feel like sitting in area in a bathing suit with all types of people walking around.
If they are going through istuctors its most likely the owner or owner's not treating them that great as a instuctor all I what is a free membership and decent pay. I know alot of istuctor that just teach so they can go to the next level and when they to compete pay for a hotel and they will wear a t-shirt that has your gym on it.
I have spoken to Brian Siders from summersville (look him up on youtube) he is a professional weightlifter and he agreed to help.

Yeah... Their instructors get a free membership and $12 for each class they teach. It got so ridiculous that they couldn't even find an instructor for a spin class.

They have TRX at LA East in Beckley. It looks pretty interesting. I'm female and I always enjoyed low impact group fitness classes like boot camp, cardio/sculpt, circuits, yogalates, step, floor aerobics, power walking, kick and tone, etc.

The boot camp and circuit classes were often co-ed. Men in those classes never made me uncomfortable. However, the weights areas in that gym are small and just a small group of guys can dominate the entire area. Buttng in and trying to get to the weights and stuff over there was annoying.

Good luck with your endeavor :) All the best!!

I love being a instructor, when I was younger I use to love going to competitions I was tought so much everytime I went. I also what to start a youth football camp I help put one on in new-york and it went great kids loved it. I know if I can get these kids started early in the weight room they will make a better life there grades will go up and maybe one day this area will be known as high recruiting area.

I also what a big area of a weight area not all jam packed and at least 10 treadmills 10 bikes, and 2 of the same weight equipment.

I agree active fitness is overpriced I wish the owner will move it I use to be a member it was funny, I use to watch people come in and asked abount the gym they notice it is really small not anough equipment and packed.

I use to do the cardio workouts they where a blast just to much money to do that. They only have a year or two left on most of the equpiment they get used way to much just because no variety. If they would move it in a bigger area and get better equipment it would be a great gym. Replace the old tv's with flat screens.

I have gone to both LA East in Beckley and Active Fitness in Oak Hill. LA East is a nice gym, you feel like you are at a gym when you are there. Active Fitness was ok when I started going there but they down sized their already small workout area when they made room for the daycare thing. Then they moved all the equipment around so that if you had to bend over to use a machine, your ass would be in the mirror!! Until then I hadn't noticed anyone looking at me (I'm a female). After that I was very uncomfortable. I also felt that they charged to much for their membership b/c they are small and don't really offer that much. I would love to see a gym in the area that is larger and has more to offer - ladies area, and personal trainers (or at least staff who know about the equipment and can answer questions). Good luck to you on opening your gym, I can't wait!

you should start small to begin and see what kind of community support you will get first before going in debt to start a expensive gym. I myself will come to your place if it is not too expensive.

love the idea, I now go to body works in beckley
Like it ok but would like to stay in fayette county
I am older but still take the classes step etc
most of body works classes have turned into zumb also not much into that. The instructors have been the same for a while and I like all of them As for price, If it is too cheap you get alot of people that do not take care of the equipment and make a big mess in the building and are rude in general. Just ask body works after their new year with their $99.00 special for 10 months. too many people to much mess not as clean. I will try a new gym. No men standing around looking at the women working out(active fitness) that is why i went to beckley. As I said I am older have to work out in the evenings ymca is good but to many kids for me.
For now it is body works Hope most of the 99.00 people are gone by march.

I personally would like to see something that is more friendly to those who work during the day.. longer evening hours would be wonderful. That along with the pricey fee of active is one of the reasons why I never went!

Great idea! My husband is a nearby coach and would love to have something like this. I hate Active...too small and rude owner. Avoid it. As a teacher in the area many of my colleagues want somewhere to go that is close by, reasonable hours, reasonable price, and kids programs. Would love it! Good luck!

All the posts above should tell you its probably not gonna work. With franchises, you have to pay a HUGE franchise fee annually. And all the people saying, WHO CAN AFFORD THE MEMBERSHIP? Um, how about EVERYONE CAN AFFORD THE MEMBERSHIPS! Its all about prioriy. And West Virginians would rather spend a fortune on cigs, crappy restaurant food, candies, etc. You ever look at people's shopping carts in stores? Thats why it wont work as a franchise. I worked for a company that was in the fitness industry, and after a few years of selling franchises, and screwing the owners, the company bought all the stores back at rock bottom prices, effectively screwing the owners. Be very careful when franchising. All your doing is paying big prices for someone elses idea. Go look at Bodyworx in Beckley... That gym is very unique, especially for this area, and it will always be there because its a fresh idea, its very exclusive, and it was Mick Bates idea. Not some gym rats that is selling a name. Ive managed a bunch of gyms and health food stores throughout Florida, if ya need anything to actually start a new facility, id definitely pass along things that work in gyms and things that will break you. You'd be amazed at the things that work that go against all rational thinking. Trust me when I say, NEVER GIVE DISCOUNTS AND DONT LOWER YOUR PRICE FOR THOSE THAT ARE CHEAP! CHARGE MORE, GET BETTER, MORE DEDICATED CLIENTELLE

Local gyms are a joke. The trainers train by day...drink beer by night...and day. Farce. A super gym might work on NYC but you're in Fayette county. If it's not rocks, river, or skis it's not supported by the powers that be. Save your cash Pete...get a treadmill.
