Is everyone here completely oblivious to the fact that we named one of our main roads after the Jones family?

Well at least your close. It was on down the road. Most of the slave tunnels are still there. I used to own the house before I sold it.

The family is very private. There will not be any tours or public activities there in the forseeable future. It is a beautiful place and it's a shame that it will not be shared with people that have admired it for many years.

I would like to know more about it, too.

Except for being millionaires, Cahrlie and Maryellen are just ordinary people. 2 of the nicest people you would even want to meet. I am sure most of us have passed them in Kroger or wal mart and not known who it is. They shop local while in Oak Hill, I have seen Charlie many times and LOL a few times he kinda was dressed like ol pop Gordon while out cutting trees on the farm, yes he does farm work on the farm also. They also have a house in Charleston and the last time I talked to Charlie, it's been a while, he was still working, running Port Amherst, down in Charleston most every day.It looks like they spend more time here now but use to live in Charleston thru the week and come to Oak Hill on the weekends.

I've always wandered about this place too. I've lived in the area my whole life, and have always loved that property. I don't know much about the family or the home itself, I just pray they do maintain it so that generations to come can enjoy passing this land mark that has graced our community for so long.

slave tunnels LOL, The house you see now was not built yet at the time of the civil war. why would there be a need for slave tunnels here, during the civil war, it was in the middle of nowhere.
There are mine shafts under a lot of oak hill..

Do you have contact information for them? I would LOVE to have my wedding there. Any chance they would rent it out? I would keep it outside and have the reception somewhere else :)

Vivian was married to Herb Jones but they were not related to the ones at Lundale farm the Jones estate. Herb and Vivian were 2 very fine people also. This Herb Jones retired from the post office in Washington D.C. If I remember right.

I, too, have often wanted to tour the Jones farm. The house was built around 1926. You can see a photo of it under construction in one of The Acorn (Oak Hill High School) yearbooks at the library annex.

My question: what about the white house on the hill at the head of Pea Ridge Road? Did anyone ever live in it? Was it built before or after the mansion?

The White House on the hill is still owned by the four children of Herbert Jones, Jr. It was originally opposite the Oak Hill Baptist Church, and was moved up the hill when the brick house was built. The brick house was built by Charles Tandy Jones and his wife May Laura Rece Jones, finished in 1910. George Milton Jones and Herbert E Jones Sr were their sons. The house on the hill is still used as a gathering place and vacation house by the Herbert Jones Jr. family, while Charles Jones and his family still use the brick house.

Yes! My grandfather and Herbert were friends, and I remember over hearing conversations of such. I've been in the mansion a lot years ago, but never the first white wood framed house. The Jones's were always down to earth, everyday folks!
