I agree. There should be high fencing with the top slanted inward to prevent people from jumping. This is a sad shame.

if the police would just do a regular patrol of the bridge it would prevent a lot of it. How much time would it take to drive it once an hour, just to check things out. It could save a life. That would be worth more than the time it would take to drive it.

I just cant figure out that if your stupi enough to kill yourself....why jump off a dam bridge.....seems like an awful long fall with lots of time to second guess that decision..as if it matters at that point.

Stupidity is not required for suicide. In some cases it would be the right way to go. Better then a slow painful death on life support. I would guess the fall would be three seconds or less. Not a lot of time to think about it.

Building a fence wouldnt stop people from jumping, if they are going to jump they are going to jump. It isnt like there are 100 people jumping off each year so the cops arent going to waste their time doing drive bys every hour. They are too busy doing protecting and serving.. Better yet setting up speed traps when it drops to 50 and by the police station.. That is if they arent at Rio eatin.. just sayin

Since I have retired and returned to the Fayetteville area I have been made aware of numerous suicides from the NR Gorge Bridge. After a 23-year old man jumped in December 08 I e-mailed an official with the WV Department of Transportation voicing my concerns. I suggested some sort of curved fencing or nets such as the Golden Gate Bridge now has. Perhaps even spaced out telephones with direct access to Suicide Preventation Hotlines could save a life. The response I received from the DOT was funding was an issue along with the consideration of the visual impact to the bridge and the logistics of the events to the Annual Bridge Day. I feel that efforts need to be taken to help the despondent and depressed, not to just ignore the issue. When there are jumpers the news articles do not publish the prior numbers, apparently so others will not be encouraged to do so. The local authorities have done an admirable job intervening and stopping some potential victims. I would hate to see the NRG Bridge have the same reputation as the GG Bridge in San Francisco.

How about we try to keep people from getting to the point where they want to jump off a bridge! Fencing this bridge will just force them to go to the "next highest" bridge they can find. I'm sure they pass plenty of them on the long drive to ours. That bridge is a landmark to WV, hundreds of thousands of people come to gaze at the unique and gorgeous view. Why should we ruin that and lose the economic impact because there are a dozen people a year from allover the east coast that are going to commit suicide, and choose our bridge over hundreds of other ways.
Think real hard on it!
