i simply do not believe it. i do not believe anyone has found it. i know that i and some friends have now done a ton of research and we actually think we know where the cannon is located. two of us are from gauley bridge and the other is a civil war re-enactment expert. i am a history teacher and the other fellow is a civil war buff. i will say that now most of our research is completed and we are ready to hit the ground in early spring 2013 for an expedition. please email me if anyone knows any other tid bits of info...

i was told by a man that i have known for years that he had spent many hours and many days looking for this canon, and found it a couple years ago. this man has always been truthful with me and i would have no reason to think he was being dishonest with me. he told me he called and asked (not sure who)if they would buy it from him or if there was a reward for it. he was told that the canon was and always will be u.s. government property, could not be sold, there was no reward offered, and if it was found in anyones posession that they would be charged with a federal offence for theft and posession of government property.
he says they then started questioning him as to who he was, where he was from, where the canon was, and that he could be charged with with-holding information and or interfering with a government investigation....he told me he just hung up without giving any information.
so it has been found but it would be wise to just let it be acording to this man.
..........The Cannon was Confederate. The US govt has nothing whatsoever to do with owning it.The site is located on private property and I would be more concerned with the land owner than the govt.

it is still there the only thing u can see is the green barrel sticking out but it is not worth my time to go get i have talked to the state and if it is found you have to turn it over and plus it has gold in it but if u try to melt it out they will see the smoke from the fire and it is in one piece it is around 800lbs so it would be hard to get up the hill have to use a atv and give u a hint where it is lol its under a old train track bridge the bridge is almost gone but u can still tell what it was

I'm the one who started this topic. I'm glad to see people are still interested in the cannon. I have heard quite a few stories about the cannon, it has been published in several books but not one of them has said it has been found. I did read one that said it could of been put in the water well at Fayetteville before the court house was burned,if it was the well was filled in which means knowone will ever find it. I do beleive it is still in the revene some where between Gauley Bridge and Cotton hill because it was at th top of the hill looking over the gauley river where they burned the old bridge. So it would be my starting point....good luck

From my research, there are at least 3 documented lost cannons in the state. One on Cotton Hill, one in a well on the Fayette County Courthouse lawn, and a third I cant remember right now where its located.

You have to remember the cannon was left there around 1865 there was a war going on here in Fayette County W.V. The men that left the cannon was on foot.and I don't think they were able to get it out they were too busy fighting for their lives.and the yanks were coming up the mountain on their tails.
