Everyone seems to talk about everything here, so I'll post this.

I've spent over a year actively trying to find a job and I can't. I apply part time, and full time. I apply at retail places, fast food joints, nice restaurants, security guard, jobs with no experience required, etc. I rarely get calls for an interview, and after an interview I never hear back.

I'm a 21 year old female. I can pass any drug test because I don't use drugs and rarely drink. I don't smoke. I'm not physically handicapped. I have no criminal record, except a couple traffic tickets (speeding, no seatbelt) which I paid my fine in full. I'm not wanted and have no warrants. I don't have any visible tattoos or piercings besides ears. I don't have a temper, and dress professionally during interviews.

I have 3 years of experience working in a grocery store. The store shut down, I didn't quit and wasn't fired. I have 2 years of college and plan on getting the other 2 once I'm not in such a financial bind.

Is the economy just this bad or is there something wrong with me? I blame my looks. I'm not pretty and I see a lot of waitresses and cashiers and secretaries are. I'm also overweight. I'm not obese, and it doesn't affect my health. But I wear about a size 16 at a height of 5'9''.

Could this be it? If not, what could it be? I'm in dire straits right now. I live on my alone so I don't have to live with a pill addicted family.

I don't understand what I can do more.

Arg, sorry this is a rant. I had to get it out even if no one reads it.

And please, PLEASE if you know of anyplace hiring let me know. I've probably tried it already but I could have overlooked something.
Just curious

Well, you stated that you 'aren't pretty'. It could be a confidence problem. Maybe you should start telling yourself that you are just as good as anyone else and just as attractive and then carry yourself into interviews with that attitude. Maybe employers are seeing your lack of confidence? IDK but if it is because you're not pretty, that is just plain wrong.

Heck, I see plenty of 'not pretty' people working all over. I seriously doubt that is it.

I'm in the same boat, but I think its just the economy. Oh, and the fact that people here that HAVE jobs keep them. I graduated college and can't find work anywhere. I'm just as good as anyone else, better than most in some cases.

Hold your head high and be proud. Stop telling yourself that your not pretty. Some of the most famous women in history were not the perfect size 6. Like Marylynn Monroe and Queen Latifa. They were/are beautiful and larger than a size 14. Positive thinking will take you places you have never been before. Good Luck!!

I agree with what everyone has said.

You may try the temporary agencies. Registration is free.

Saunders and Kellys are two that come to mind.

Attitude is EVERYTHING, how you carry yourself, don't slump have good eye contact but don't stare down your interviewer. Looks can always play a part in their decision but attitude can overcome anything.
From what little you typed I see a lot of insecurity, you don't want to take the lead and you might feel out of place if responsibility was handed to you. I have always felt self help was a load of crap, try bring yourself up by helping others around you, this can give you confidence.

You are a bum. Sounds like to me you never finished anything you started. That's the problem with you young people always looking for cop out. There are jobs out there but seems like you are too lazy to look. You are the main reason this country is broke.

If you haven't been working in a year and live on your own, you should qualify for financial aid to go back to school and finish your degree. Try filling out the FAFSA (google it to find the website) and see what you are eligible for.

Breeze1235, how exactly have I "never" finished anything I started? I finished high school, I stayed at my last job until I couldn't anymore. I had to drop out of college because it wasn't feasible anymore. When I build my savings back and find a job I want to go back. And too lazy to look? Please. Most local businesses are getting sick of my face as often as I apply, and reapply, and reapply...but I'm sure you're just a troll.

To everything, thanks. I'm going to apply (for the 2nd or 3rd time in some cases lol) to all the places you mentioned.

I do have a confidence problem.:( I'm going to try to get over it. It just sucks walking into a fast food restaurant and having a bunch of 16 year old's calling you names they think you can't hear.

But that's not a copout or excuse. I'm going to move ahead and do everything I can to find a job.

Thanks.:)

Get used to that teenager thing. The older you get the worse they snicker at you. Put on your thick skin sweetie, this is a prickly world we have made for ourselves. Hold your head up and look people in the eyes and be proud of who you are. That is really the only thing a college degree gives you, confidence and self-respect.

You are obviously not stupid. You write very well, so take pride in your brain if you don't in your body. But I would suggest looking in the mirror every morning and saying to yourself, ;I am attractive and deserving of respect.' You'd be surprised how much that will help your confidence over time.

As an employer, I can tell you what people like me look for most. Proof you know the field ( and those are a dime a dozen) and evidence you can carry out the tasks we hand you.(the way you present yourself in the interview is what decides that) Personally, I like someone to look at me directly when I ask a question and I detest someone who mumbles and seems confused. If you have no answer, quickly decide that and say 'I don't know.' Never look down and turn red and start making up some BS that just makes you appear foolish. 75% of an interview is not testing your knowledge, but it's testing your ability to make decisions quickly and efficiently and gives an employer an opportunity to see how you react under pressure.

Seeing your writing ability, I can tell you that you would make an excellent office hand. Go to the unemployment office and look for anything related to that field. You will get an interview.

Sweetie, sorry to hear about your problem.. I agree, I think it is a confidence problem.. there are places that will help you with your interview skills. In fact if this post is not a joke and you would like help I would help you with this (and I have a few acquaintances that work at places that are hiring).. I assure you I am not a crazy person, I am an employee at a local hospital (have been for many years). And would coach you in your interviewing at a public place.. My concern is that if you do not get a handle on what's holding you back as well as realizing that where looks come everyone has pluses and minuses.. You need to not compare yourself to others.. Realize the beauty that you have.. And if you think you have problems with your weight I work out 5 days a week and have spoken to dietitians many years ago and can help you with that also.. Life is about the personal choices you make, the only thing holding you back is yourself. If you are serious and need help just reply here and I will provide you with a way to contact me.. Also the financial aid idea is a good one.. Not sure what you were wanting to go to school for.. I also know the hospital is hiring for a few jobs.. Good luck, and know that my offer is sincere.

See? You've made a great impression already. Your skills at articulation through writing are proven. You should be very proud. I would look into the kind person's offer and consider their advice.

I keep checking back hoping she wants help.. For some reason she just hit a nerve with me.. Another thought I had (not sure of your opinion) is the military.. Which I could help you with also.. I have family that is very high ranking in the army and navy.. And a friend who is a recruiter for the air force (could not directly help you as he is in new orleans, but can give you some guidance) I only thought of the military as it will give you self esteem, help you with team building and communication skills, pay for college, get you in shape, and allow you to build relationships with people that you will keep forever.. And on top of that, get you away from family members that I believe are still pulling you down.. Just a thought.. There is rotc (go to college first they pay most then commit to the military as an officer)n traditional active duty and reserves.. I would also be more than willing to take you to all the branches as well as help you study for the asvab and get you in shape..
