Can anyone here tell me if its a good place to work? I am curious to know how much CO's get paid, what kind of benefits they offer, and just if its a good place to be in general. Thanks!

Gene Spadaro is one of the most corrupt places in the Division of Juvenile Services. The Director, Ralph Terry is possibly the worst director in the Division. The Gene Spadaro Juvenile Center is one of the only places that does not follow the policies and procedures set forth by the Division of Juvenile Services. They are not professional by any means. Recently it was reported one of their officers struck a resident in his groin. The matter was investigated and the officer was given a one day suspension. This seems to be grounds for termination. Do you want your children to be struck by an adult? Do you want to work at a place that would let their officers get away with this?

The kids that are in the place deserved to be beat. If their parents would have done that a long time ago they wouldn't be in that place.

The KIDS there are troubled and need structure and discipline but they do not deserve to be abused. As for the staff, they are extremeely unprofessional!!!! I would do everything I could to keep my kid or any family member from going to that facility and I definitely would not work there!!

Ralph Terry has been the Facility Director for the Gene Spadaro Juvenile Center, since it opened in 2004. Ralph started employment with the WV Division of Corrections in 1986 as a Correctional Officer at the WV Penitentiary at Moundsville. Ralph moved up through the ranks at the Penitentiary from Correctional Officer to the rank of Sergeant in 1990 and then to Unit Manager of the maximum security unit (North Hall) in 1992. Ralph transferred from the Penitentiary to the Mt. Olive Correctional Complex in July 1994 to aid in the hiring of staff and opening of the new facility which opened in February 1995. Ralph transferred from the Mt. Olive Correctional Complex to the Anthony Correctional Center as the Associate Warden of Programs in February 1999. In October 2000, Ralph transferred to the WV Industrial Home for Youth as the Assistant Superintendent of Security. He acted as Facility Director from September 2003 to April 2004 at the Eastern Regional Juvenile Center, located in Martinsburg. In April 2004, he was named the Facility Director at the Gene Spadaro Juvenile Center. Ralph received a BS Degree in Administration of Criminal Justice in 2008 from Mountain State University. He is currently working on his Masters of Legal Studies through West Virginia University.

Here is Ralphie's resume. I don't see any mention of education in social services, psychology, etc. All I see is a background working with adult hardened criminals. Is it any wonder he didn't raise an eyebrow when a child was hit in the groin?

This person does not appear to be suited to be in charge of a facility serving troubled adolescents.

It is not only the groin punch. Other things that happen on his watch make it unsafe for the children of Gene Spadaro to be there. He has actually referred to some of the female residents as "His Girl"....and the staff is very unprofessional. There is a reason for this. The reason is he has let this facility operate like this since 2004. So any new employees that come in there are just being taught what is being practiced on a day to day basis there.

Not only are the juveniles being struck, they're also status offenders who are being locked down. This is illegal. A status offender cannot be locked up unless Ralph Terry decides to file charges on the resident for something bad enough to have charges. This has never been corrected since the locked doors were installed.

I have been in there several times gathering information that would support what we have all thought. Now that I have that info I will be forwarding it to the Governor.

Why dont you all talking smack try to work there. The pay is good. Ralph Terry isnt such a bad guy. The ppl on here talking bad about the place are prob. the ones who have recently been canned. There for the have started this conversation outta agnger for being let go. not to mention the ones that have been let go is because of good reasons. I have worked there for a while. i will be finding a job but it isnt because any of the things mentioned. its how the state wantes things done. Why not lock down a status offender when he or she is fighting or causeing A LOT of problems. However, no we do not beat nor mistreat the children. Matter a fact you wouldnt believe how many children who are sent back are glad to be there and actually miss the staff.

It must not be that good of a place to work, remember it was in the paper not too long ago, DHHR was going to step in and take over. People who work there currently, and the ones who don't all say the same thing!
And just so you know, I have never worked there. I have a better job.

I worked there about 2 years ago and I wasnt canned I quit becuase RALPH TERRY is a MORON!!!!! And it doesnt have anything to do with "how the state wants thingd done" its how Ralph Terry wants things done. And you are a total moron too if you think that "Ralph Terry isnt such a bad guy". And why not lock a status offender down when he or she is causing a lot of trouble? BECAUSE ITS ILLEGAL!!!!!!! BUT you guys do it anyway. And its not because they miss the staff.....LMAO....its because they are allowed to do whatever they want....whenever they want by the majority of officers that work there. Youre talking to someone who KNOWS what goes on there so dont come to me with that crap. And as for the pay....when I worked there I was bringing home almost 650 every two weeks.....WONDERFUL PAY!!!!!

Ok so if you were good there you got treated good. I think that the staff are as professional as they can be with juvinile delinquints. I mean a staff member was stabbed in the throat with a sharpened pencil. I saw a kid go crazy in there spitting at the staff and shitting and throwing it at the staff and they did restrain him but did not beat him. I've seen a boy picked up and put against a wall by a staff member for fighting that is called for if you ask me. I absolutly loved all of my teachers there and the supervisors were very strict but still cared. The staff were strict too some worst than others and I didn't like some but thought the world of some others. They just want to help. I was locked up for truancy and that's it but it was the judges choice not the facilities. I had to wear shackles and handcuffs to court. They had some good pizza and wings on fridays and they made me a badass brownie cake on my bday lol
