The Associated Press has finally discovered math, and realizes that Barack Obama’s numbers don’t add up. Don’t expect this to last long, but the AP finally reports what every sentient being outside the mainstream media and the Democratic Party (but I repeat myself) already understood:

President Barack Obama promised to fix health care and trim the federal budget deficit, all without raising taxes on anyone but the wealthiest Americans. It’s a promise he’s already broken and will likely have to break again. Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress have already increased tobacco taxes — which disproportionately hit the poor — to pay for extending health coverage to 4 million children in working low-income families.

Now, lawmakers are looking for more revenues to help pay for providing medical insurance to millions more who lack it at a projected cost of $1 trillion over the next decade.

The floated proposals include increasing taxes on alcohol, which could raise $62 billion over the next decade, and a new tax on sugary drinks such as soda, which could raise $52 billion.…

Obama made a firm tax pledge during the presidential campaign, repeating it numerous times in the weeks and months leading up to Election Day: no tax increases for individuals making less than $200,000 a year or couples making less than $250,000.

“Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes,” Obama told a crowd in Dover, N.H., last year.

Wow! Not only did the AP recognize that Obama broke his pledge not to raise taxes on people below $250,000, but they also acknowledge that Democrats like regressive taxes as much as they like progressive taxes. In fact, it would be easier to report that they just like any tax they can pass.

It gets better. AP reporter Stephen Ohlemacher notes that the cap-and-trade bill amounts to a tax on American families, although he uses the bogus $175 per year estimate from the CBO that only includes the cost of implementing and maintaining the system. It doesn’t count the cost increases of energy not just on the homes themselves, but on every step of the distribution chain for goods and services, which will create a significant jump in prices, which is also a sharply regressive burden as it will hit hardest those with less disposable income.

But little steps are better than no steps. Perhaps now that the AP has admitted that Obama lied about his economic policies, they can start reporting honestly on their costs.

Yipper..I'm still thinkin about it though. Of course you do know...the valid accounting comes from GAO. Those are the folks with the valid data to assess with.

I'm not so sure those AP pinheads really know what they are talking about. Of course...I noticed that was a yahoo broadcast.

But...I'm sure I will be adding more comments...

Yeah..I read the whole article...quotes from former Reagan treasury pinheads....and select health care officials...yipper...we know what those folks agenda really is.

But..it wasn't bad...for a right-wing christian crusading article. The tax on tobacco is old news though. And tax on alcohol dosen't bother me a bit. I'm a non drinker.

I was hoping for something more substantial and definitive. Sorta disappointed in you actually...over this one.

Are you really going to act like AP is not credible? They were in the tank for Obama just like everybody else.

I'm gonna act like there currently is no healthcare bill on Pres Obamas desk yet. And before it shows up there it will be public domain for all to observe. That what I'm gonna act like.

But I'm not gonna act like I buy into some he-said-he-said fodder just because it has an AP endorsement. I mean really...I've heard Keith Oberman and Mr. Lou Independant Dobbs cite AP before. I've even seen AP quoted in the Enquirer before. And those folks haven't always been right...I'm sure you will agree.

You will have to do better than that.

Public domain? We were supposed to be able to view these things and I think that promise was broken a long time ago. They aren't even reading things before passing them. COMMON SENSE!

I can't believe you are stating AP isn't credible when it was openly in the tank for Obama. I can't blame them though after her gave a HuffPO guy the first question instead of AP, a question that was completely orchestrated mind you.

And I'm still gonna act like there is not yet a health care bill on Pres Obamas desk. And I don't recall stating AP wasn't credible. Those are your fabricated words. You've gotten really bad about that lately ya know.

Congress can't read all of every bill that comes their way. I would be saying that regardless of the majority. Those bills are hundreds of pages long and they get several every week.

The source document uses the following assumption as a basis:

""It is simply implausible for the vast majority of Americans to get a free ride while the nation tackles such an incredibly difficult — and expensive — issue.""

I don't think any national health care bill will ever be drafted to provide for the vast majority of Americans. I figure there will be a bill drafted to cover those without medical insurance. Which is a far cry from the vast majority. Thats why I don't really give any credibility to the source document.

Time will tell....

I believe that Obama truly means well. But the problem is is that he probably didn't realize the magnitude of the mess he inherited from Alfred E. Bush and is left with no other option than to resort to taxation in order to pull us up from drowning in debt.

You know, Boats, do you ever think back and wonder what shape our country would be in right now if Al Gore had not had the election stolen from him? Just lay back and imagine this: no needless war in Iraq, the continuation of Clinton's deficit reduction and budget surplus, no Gitmo hanging over our heads, our country's reputation around the world still intact...ah, just imagine the possibilities.

Oh, and considering Clinton left Bush a letter in the desk of the Oval Office warning him about Bin Laden's possible terrorist attack, a warning Bush chose to ignore because it had come from Clinton, it's possible that an Al Gore presidency could have prevented the 9/11 attack. But because of the idiots that voted for an incompetent moron (twice!), it's going to take a h#ll of a long time before our country sees the light of day.

Obama has his work cut out for him, and the least you guys can do is cut him some slack for having the responsibility of cleaning up one of the biggest messes our country has ever undergone as he tries to wade through the devastation and destruction left by Hurricane Bush over the last 8 years.

Your right , President Obama is doing the best he can for what was left from the previous administration, and thank God he has 31 different Czars earning up to $172,000 each(plus their staff adding a cost of millions more to the white House budget) to help. We are lucky these people only have to report to the President because our elected officials are just to darn busy to be let in on whats going on in the running of our country, ain't none of their business anyway. As long as they can just add their special projects to any bill they pass like the lights for a farmers market in Ohio, and street lights and sidewalks thats in the health care Bill. Thats going to help the uninsured How ????

President Obama is quickly learning that special interest groups and lobbyists for big corporations have all the power. He has about as much power as you or I. Forget about the health care bill. I'll believe it when I see it.

This is a lot to address but Gore as president is pretty funny to start. He probably would have went to war too just like all the other Democrats that voted for the thing. If no war in Iraq means we have more terrorist attacks here then I'll take the war in Iraq myself. Don't start with Clinton's warnings when the guy had several chances to kill Bin Laden and passed so he must not have taken it very serious either. As far as Bush goes we've been over this numerous times. The economy was in pretty good shape even having the worst attack ever. We enjoyed record highs in the stock market and it really wasn't until the last two years, with a Democrat congress that things went nutty. I will admit Bush did some spending I don't agree with but to say Obama inherited a Bush mess in just incorrect. He inherited his own mess considering he was right there voting for every spending bill put before him. Congress is really the body that is responsible for the spending if you didn't know. I've posted numerous charts and data that supports all this. Hell, it's July so the blame Bush excuse can't really fly anymore.

You are right about that -- they get several several hundred page bills every single day that they are in session (no one Congressperson could possibly read everything or even most of it or probably even a good double digit percentage of it).

Daily Horoscope for December 27

Taurus

Make a big effort to spend time with people you didn't see on Christmas Day, especially if they're older than you or are having a bad time at the moment. You're brimming over with compassion and empathy, which will be really appreciated by anyone who's on the receiving end of them. You're also in the mood to make allowances for people, and that will help enormously.
