you know, gossiping and backstabbing goes on anywhere, in any school. name me one place where gossip in an office is not present. i am glad that the teachers are friends and get along. does them going out together affect the education that your child gets? being a boss and a friend is difficult, hopefully this principal can draw that fine line. as far as the aides go, they are aides, don't make a lot, they are there to help the teachers and really, as long as the teacher is certified and the aide is competent and treats my child well, i don't care if they are "just a bunch of moms."

The Archdiocese has a policy which principals are compelled to follow. The policy was implemented so that students would have qualified and certified teachers.(The State of Illinois also sets standards which even Catholc school teachers must fulfill or face the consequences. Some of it it tied in with funding for a school.) The policy has an established procedure which includes professional development. Teachers had five years to comply. Those who chose not to follow the policy made a conscious decision which they knew would lead to the possilbilty their job would be in jeopardy.
Personalites aside, everyone has rules and policies at their place of employment. If a person chooses not to follow them ...

very true and understandable. i guess it is easier to take out disappointments on the past principal instead of on the teachers, given the situation now. i agree that the teachers should have complied, it is their own doing as long as they were aware of the requirements. unfortunately, the one i knew was a good teacher though and it is the children who are going to lose out. i don't know the other teacher that was let go, but i did hear that the school got a new music and art teacher. hopefully they are as committed to the children. we can just move forward and hope for the best.

From what I understood was these teachers could have been spared from losing their jobs if a letter was written on their behalf. They were both good teachers. I understand having certified teachers teaching our kids. I want what is best for my kids education because we are paying big dollars for it, but the Archdiocese needs to examine all schools because there are non certified teachers at other schools. I don't want it to be a revolving door at St. Damian where young teachers get their experience, then move on. That hurts our kids. I did hear that all three positions were filled. I wish the old teachers the best of luck and the new teachers success.

For not being a certified teacher, the music teacher sure did display her talents very well. I hope this new teacher can uphold her end as well.

With all this attention on St. Damian, I did a search on youtube and found that there are several postings of our children by someone named MaryDplus4. I never gave my permission or consent to have my kids posted on the internet. I am very disturbed that other parents are making postings of my kids on the internet. This blog and the internet is making me feel very disturbed in the direction St. Damian is going.

I have to disagree about the Pastor. When my Grandma was sick in the hospital at Palos we seen Father in the elevator he ask what we are doing we told him. He got off the elevator and said let's go see her and pray. At 4am he came over and gave last rites. The pastor does care about the people in his church as alway as the school. He also cares about the people in the community (meaning you don't have to be registered at St. damian's). The people are leaving Religious Education because it is too expensive. The are leaving the Catholic schools because it's too expensive plus the public schools have more funding then private schools. People can not afford private schools now. Catholic schools were affordable years ago you had Nuns and priest teaching classes. It just comes down to money! I go to St. Julie's of Billart because I can afford the religious Education, I feel bad but we need to do what we need to afford for our budget and my children are still getting excellent education. Sorry St. Damiens's, lower your tuition!

The best years of my life were spent at this school. My children attend there now, and we all love it. How anyone could be critical is beyond me. Remember folks, the only perfect man is the one we pray to.

I have never heard anyone criticize St Damien school. You must be a student who flunked English. Why don't you grow up before entering an adult world. Why would any adult criticize the public schools? The are every bit as competent as the private schools.

I too have noticed the "coldness" of the principal. He doesn't waste a breath on me when I pass him every morning while dropping the kids off. Coming from a new parent to the school, I am not impressed and will be pulling my children out at the end of the school year.
I totally agree with your comment. I wish that Medinah Intermediate parents were warned about Chad Prosen before he came on board at our school. He started off real nice and now his personality ranks a negative 0 and his attitude sucks. As an parent I will be lucky if I get a hello or thank you once a week, and that's pushing it. It's because of me and other parents sending our children to that school that he has a job. He should be looking up at us and our children instead of looking down at everyone. What makes him so special.(NOTHING) There already have been complaints about him and he hasn't even been there a year. I think that the board needs to look at the entire picture and figure out that he is not good for our school. He is very RUDE and that is unaccepatable especailly when dealing with children. The staff has changed in a negative way because of him. It's like walking on pins and needles. He doesn't get involved with the kids at all. No greeting the kids in the morning when they get off the bus, during lunch or even after school when the kids get on the bus. I can guarantee you by the end of the school year he will only know half the kids name in the school unlike the other principals in our district they can tell you every childs name that walks through the door on a daily basis. On a rating from 1-10 he gets a 2 and that's sad seeing that he is new! I hope that I don't see him next year for our childrens sake!

Our society has come to this! Hiding on a screen watching "Lost" bashing a school that I and the family like, because we made it that way. If the mold (alleged) exisists I am sure it is a level that wll not harm the children, please get real if people only knew how much mold they have in their own homes they would have to move if they are this anal about school. Mold exisits everywhere, cheese, bread etc. If things bother you that much have a forum. I am sure if you invite people they will come. Peace
There is a huge difference between the mold on or in cheese and the black mold that exists in older buildings. Black mold causes and-or aggravates sinus and upper respiratory problems. Exposed to it can result in headaches, nausea, serious allergic reactions and serious if not fatal respiratory issues. To dismiss the seriousness of its existence in out schools does a graves disservice to parent and children's health and well being.

This is toxic black mold, not what appears on your porch deck after a thunderstorm. Serious remediation is likely but Damian can't or won't pay for it.

Also, as far as certification, it is my understanding that the State of Illinois requires that all teachers teaching K thru 8 be certified to teach elementary school.

By way of example, my friend taught HS and moved to a Chicago public elementary school. He was given a grace period to obtain the certification, but the certification was required even to sub for elementary.

I would imagine this requirement holds true for both public and private elementary schools.

These are the same complaints that St. Damian had about him and also the same complaints that his previous school had about him. He puts on a show at first but parents catch on. He did get involved and take part in a play which the kids enjoyed but I would assume that he really wasn't happy about it. He did bring up some good points at times during discussions but he also seemed very "uppity." I would not trust him, I hear he is very two faced, this from others that worked with him. Our staff also seemed on pins and needles as you put it. He definitely did not try to get to know the kids or their names. He was outside greeting for a little while, which was impressive, but that tapered off. He was "forced" out to do buses. He did not make you feel welcome at all, I most definitely could not walk into his office or stop him in the hall to have a conversation about my child. He is not a personable person at all and that is important when you are working with children and many different types of parents. He was telling people that he is using your school, as he did ours, as a stepping stone to a higher position. Supposedly he was told by higher ups there that he can attain that within a few years by you. I truly wish you good luck with dealing with him and the parents are the advocates for their children, if the dislike for him is that strong, take it to the board, make your voices heard. It may be different if it is a public school, with the politics being involved, but I wish you good luck and you have the support of many many Damian families. Good luck!

I wish the person from Prosen's new school would have started another thread. It was nice to come on this board for so long and not see this. It is quite a bitter, negative commentary on a school- that I think overall is very good. We have three kids at Damian and love it. Let it go people!

I do not think it is a bitter commentary on the school, I can't recall the previous posts since it has been a while, but recent posts are negative towards the former principal, NOT the school. Maybe this post is from one of the former prinicpal's "buddies" though. The school has always, as long as our children have been there, been a good school. We may not have liked the administration so much, but the school itself and teachers have been wonderful. I think the school is going in a positive direction. Who cares if someone from the new school comes on here to "vent" the disapproval of someone that we have in common. Give them that and if you don't like it, don't read it.

To Wrong-

I did not say that the person from Prosen's new school does not have the right to voice an opinion. I said "I wish they would have started a new thread".

Do look back on some of these posts.....all 100+ of them. Most are related to outdated issues and the majority are quite nasty. If the intended target was Prosen (as you claim).....there are an awful lot of them that are just bashing the school, teachers, tuition and so on. Just sayin~

Why re-hash and dig up all this crap? What will be accomplished?
