Oak Forest to host inaugural Fleadh

The Oak Forest Chamber of Commerce and the city of Oak Forest will host the inaugural Oak Forest Fleadh beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday on Cicero Avenue between 151st Street and 159th Street.

The Oak Forest Chamber of Commerce and the city of Oak Forest will host the inaugural Oak Forest Fleadh beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday on Cicero Avenue between 151st Street and 159th Street.

The Fleadh, which is Gaelic for "festival," will include customer appreciation parties, a 5K race, an open bike ride, a family parade and the second annual Pub and Restaurant Open House.

"We're hoping this is a new tradition for Oak Forest," city Community Development Director Adam Dotson said. "It's an opportunity to celebrate our Irish roots in a family-friendly way."

Free parking will be available all day and night in the Arbor Commuter Lot at the southwest corner of 159th Street and Oak Avenue (across from the Metra train station). Fest-goers also can park at Gaelic Park and take a free shuttle to Cicero Avenue.

Cicero Ave. will be closed from 149th to 159th from 8:30 until the end of the Parade. Cicero will have limted traffic from 147 to 149 for the business along Cicero.

The parade will kick off at 11 a.m. from 151st Street and travel along Cicero Avenue to 157th Street.

IT SHOULD BE A FUN DAY FOR ALL. I HOPE THE WEATHER IS GOOD. BLARNEY STONE IS HAVING A TRADITIONAL IRISH BREAKFAST STARTING AT 8AM AND THERE IS RELAY RACES, 5K RUN, PARADE AND SO MUCH MORE THAN DRINK. I'll be there too, probably at about 156th & Cicero during the parade.
I live a few blocks east of there and may bring the grandchildren since there may be some activities for them at the Waverly Metra lot.
May even ride my bicycle on Cicero Ave.
Every year I watch as Cicero is briefly closed by the "Manteno Veteran's Ride" in the fall.
I've never seen it completely closed in my 34 years living here.
The weather will be fine, mostly cloudy but relatively warm.
No rain and almost 50°
I think the organizers of this event did a great job.

As soon as I clicked post comment, I realized I needed to clarify. Cicero has been closed, but just not for a scheduled event that I recall.
The most recent I remember was when a car drove over a gas meter on the west side across from Aldi's. It may have even been partially closed Saturday as our officers chased down an armed suspect just north of the new CVS.
