Wondering about opinions in the 5th ward alderman race. Hullinger (incumbent) vs. Daniel Ensing or any others. I just mention these 2 because those are the ones for which we have received flyers so far.

Hello-

I am running for 5th Ward alderman and would be more than happy to speak with or meet anyone regarding my qualifications. I have an email account set-up specifically for the 5th Ward race, [email protected]

I would be happy to hear from anyone interested and will meet face to face, speak over the phone, whatever.

Interesting concept, an alderman that cares enough about resident's concerns to read and respond to comments on the internet. These posts may be truth, or fiction, but politicians should pay attention to them. Thank you Mr. Ensing.

I do not know the incumbent for alderman but I do know Dan Ensing. He is a stand up guy who will listen to you and ask questions to better understand your ideas. I believe he is interested in helping to make the community better for all affected. He is not afraid to speak up and voice his opinion and question those he doesn't agree with. I think he is a fair guy and will listen to people, something that I think some politicians lack. Good luck Dan!

Hi Dan,

I'm not a candidate and I haven't recieved a flyer yet from anyone. However, I'm pretty tired of Nancy as Alderman (been in OF a while). It seems as if it isn't benefitting her or her husband, she's not interested in our issues. I also think the multiple paying positions she has with the city should be disallowed. Better to have multiple citizens doing these things and serving the city then one person trying to do too much. We have a lot of folks who are more then deserving of a chance to serve in some of those positions.
That said, I'd like to know your thoughts on the following in our ward:
~What exactly can you do to assist us with crime prevention (specifically, why are we the only ward with no Neighborhood Watch?)
~Your thoughts on the state of the city's finacial issues. Would you encourage the other Aldermen to forgo 1/2 of their pay in order to help balance our city's budget?
~ Pension issues. Our school districts are not immune to the economic downturn. Should the teachers/PW employees strike when their contracts are up, would you be siding with the city or with the unions?
Would love you feedback, and thanks for posting here.

You're easily impressed. If you need to contact Nany Hullinger or any other of the Alderman you can log onto the City website and send an e-mail. So politician's should pay attention to posts on this web site wether they are true or made up and respond to them. Brilliant!

Yep, that's interesting advice, too bad it don't always work. You obviously haven't tried it. The email goes to city hall, but no responses come back. Yes they should pay attention to everything that's being said here so they can correct all the false rumors. Hiding from rumors is easy for them. Educating residents is a better solution.

So, let's hear from the residents. do your elected officials repond to email?

I've actually picked up the phone and spoken to my Alderman regarding a couple of different matters. And I have his home e-mail address just in case. And it's not their job to correct rumors, half truths and the other misinformation on this website. None of our elected officials have that kind of time.

I have called Ms. Hullinger twice to assist with block parties. Never got a call back nor did she come and visit out street.

I'm sure no elected official doesn't want to reposnd anywhere where their response can be seen by more than one person. They all live in fear of having to account for their actions (ha) That being said, we're talking about some not-so-tough questions that I asked Dan. I'm sure he's a cool guy, but the chances of me meeting him are slim, so if he chosses to voice his information here, then he should at lease answer the (basic) questions of those here. Remember, if you don't embrace this technology, it'll only run you over.

Dan (or Nancy, ot the other 5th ward cand's), please feel free to post your answers as well.

Some people work full time jobs. I'm sure that Mr. Ensing will respond to your questions as soon as he can. Have you checked out the Oak Forest Patch and Facebook? He has some valuable information about himself, background and ideas on those sites. Doesn't look like h is hiding to me! I'm just saying..........

To Note to Dan:

Sorry, it was a long day at work yesterday and this is the first chance I've had to visit Topix. I embrace technology with both arms, and have created a Facebook page for my campaign ( www.facebook.com/ensingforalderman ) and have a candidate profile on Oak Forest Patch ( http://oakforest.patch.com/local_facts/2011-e... ). I also posted my email address in my very first post ([email protected]).

But, technology isn't the only way to run a campaign. Since Feb. 19th I have been out walking the 5th Ward handing out literature. I've knocked on every door west of Central Ave., and have recently completed El Vista, Sunset Ct., and Long Ave. Is it inefficent? Maybe, but it's also personal and a way to get to know the ward. I've seen sidewalks in need of repair and streets that flood after it rains. Note to Dan (sorry, I don't know your real name), your chances of meeting me are excellent. If I haven't walked your street yet I invite you to email me ([email protected]) your address and when you would like to meet me. If you don't want it to be at your house I will gladly meet you at the place of your choosing. If you don't want either, send me an email ([email protected]) and I will respond with my cell phone number and I would be happy to speak to you over the phone. Or visit my Facebook page or my Oak Forest Patch candidate page and obtain my cell phone from either.

As to your questions...

1. I would meet with the Crime Prevention Commission and the Police Department and see what would have to be done to get a Neighborhood Watch started in the 5th Ward. I have eight years experience in law enforcement and well over a thousand hours in training. I have met with community groups and presented information on basic crime prevention tips, and would be happy to do the same in the 5th Ward. Looking at the recent crime statistics I noted a wallet was stolen out of a car in an open garage. This was a crime of opportunity and preventable, and something I would cover.

2. I'm an investigator for a living, having worked on organized retail crime cases and financial crimes cases. Before I would ask anyone to give up any salary or benefits I would look at other ways to save money and cut losses/ expenses.

3. I am running for 5th Ward alderman and will not speak on issues regarding the teacher's union and the teacher's benefits. That is a separate taxing body. Regarding Public Works and their contract it is my understanding they recently settled it.

Again, I encourage you (or anyone) to email and reach out to me. Thanks!

Thank you Dan. Far more proactive outreach then anything I've seen of my last two aldermen.

Good luck

It really strikes me funny. There are currently 22 users viewing this thread(which is more than usual). Subtracting the users from other towns, which might be 15(they are very dedicated), that leaves possibly 7 regular viewers on this thread from Oak Forest, and that number is most likely the number of posters who regularly post from Oak Forest. That makes the blog immaterial in the elections. I wonder what I am doing here. Bored I guess.

Thank you very much, Mr. Ensing, for responding on this forum! Also appreciate the link for Facebook page. Some of my concerns/issues are as follows. Please feel free to copy on the Facebook page where there is a larger audience.
1. Sidewalk repairs/flooding
2. Code enforcement - specifically,
a. cars parked accross sidewalks
b. bushes overgrown onto sidewalks branches dangling lowly on sidewalks.
These 2 issues greatly impact those of us who walk, ride bikes and push strollers.
3. Police presence. I thought that I read something last year about the police doing some bike patrols in the neighborhoods. I did not ever see any in this area. I know that they are busy and maybe it seems kind of "hokey" but it seems it would be great to see them out and about in a more personal way.
4. Convent Park - somehow providing increased monitoring here. Not just due to vandalism but making it more family friendly. Some of the young people over there seem to be in a contest to see who can say the "f" word the loudest and the most times. I would love to be able to let my kids go over there and hang out with friends but I just don't feel it is safe.
Thanks!

What part of bored don't you understand? I surely wouldn't put any stock in what is posted here except by the candidatr, and then with a grain of salt.

There is no credibility to this site. If it were a requirement to use your real name and real e mail then that might be a different story. Anyone can sign on here and say there someone else and type whatever they want. This site belongs shut down. I am not saying there is not good useful information out there it just is not on this site.
