Lark Theater board apologizes to teen sex documentary filmmaker

Full story: Marin Independent Journal

The Lark Theater has apologized to a 24-year-old filmmaker and scheduled her documentary on teen pregnancy and the abstinence-only movement for two screenings next month after theater officials pulled the film last week because of two board members' objections.

I am very glad the theater has done the right thing and apologized to this young filmmaker. However, I am not sure if I want to support this theater or its films any more if it has a board that is willing to participate in censorship of artists and is so close-minded and out of touch that it does not believe that teenagers and their parents do not need to talk about sexuality. This is precisely the time when a parent would like to have such a conversation and documentaries and other art on the subject allows parents to have a starting point to open the lines of communication.

I don't really go to this theater anyway...I'm not sure if I will ever wander in now. I prefer the Rafael because I do not feel such censorship would take place there.

Still...no support or attendance to Lark Theater from this ex-goer. No interest in supporting narrow minds. Best 'o luck.

liberals solution
free birth control
and if your too stupid, lazy or high at the time to use it an abortion
heaven forbid they might actually have to make a moral decision
that would require passing judgement
and we can't have that

I plan to attend one of the screenings next month and welcome Chris Albinson's desire to train the other board members on their roles and responsibilities. We need to applaud and support this organization for not hesitating in responding to this snafu and overstepping of authority.

I'm glad the board as a whole decided to reverse themselves and I hope those two directors are suitably embarassed and have the good grace to resign from the board immediately.

This was a terrible situation that should never have occurred, but as an experienced nonprofit employee I have to say the board's response is top-notch. And regardless of how people may feel about supporting the Lark after this, I hope they can set that aside and show support for the filmmaker by attending one of the December screenings. That is the very best way to make a statement about what happened.

I agree. Our community should support this young filmmaker and attend the screening.

Thank you to the Board for recognizing it's deficiencies. Please remove the two board members immediately. We don't need narrow mined, thought police censoring independent theatre arts. Make it up to the filmmakers and show the film asap.

He has a good point, but put on those shiny leather jackboots and attack Him for not properly spelling "You're".
Extremely predictable tactic You have, if You can't add a proper rebuttal, then attack them for Their spelling.

Typical Leftist behaviour..

Who cares what you think or where you go, This is why people have problems because people just like you have to say something and do not know what they are saying

Meanwhile, here's the political spin on it:

From the 2008 Republican Platform: "We renew our call for replacing "family planning" programs for teens with increased funding for abstinence education, which teaches abstinence until marriage as the responsible and expected standard of behavior. Abstinence from sexual activity is the only protection that is 100% safe against out-of-wedlock births "

Regardless if this film is supporting birth control (an effective method, in my opinion) or the abstinence-only method (rather ineffective, if you agree with a number of studies done on the subject, and if you recall even being a teenager), we do have free-speech laws in this country. Interestingly, none of them were broken today.

Free speech laws specifically prevent the government from impinging on the rights of individuals, not individuals impinging on the free speech of others, except in particular cases of racism, sexism, libel, and a few other special cases (malls, for instance, can't ask someone petitioning to leave unless they are disruptive), none of which includes this film. The Lark theater may choose to support or not support this film as the board sees fit.

And by the by, in the scale of the internet in general and Facebook in particular, getting "hundreds" of emails and comments is just a drop in the bucket. You'd have to break 100,000 messages, even as an independent documentary filmmaker, to even be considered "known" to people. Facebook has 500 MILLION active users. Say 500 people sent messages. That's .01% of active Facebook users.
