The mother of the girl who got bitten is an idiot because she failed to teach her daughter how to NOT trespass on a neighbor's property. What kind of a mother allows her daughter to peep over a neighbor's fence? It would be one thing if the dog was roaming and bit the girl, but obviously, the dog was confined in the owner's yard. The fault clearly lies with the mother and now she is trying to punish others for her own stupidity.

I've filled out many dog bite reports over the many years I've worked at a medical facility. Now that I think about it, not one has ever been reported as a pitbull. It just bothers me that pitbulls get the bad rap. I raised on from a 6 week old puppy and he was the sweetest thing ever.

The first case shouldn't even be used as an example. The dog was properly restrained, the child was not.

Breed specific bans don't help anyone, you just end up with full shelters and the deaths of innocent dogs.

Owners need to be more responsible with their training and restraint methods and parents need to teach their children the 'dos and don'ts' on approaching unfamiliar animals.

Little dogs are more likely to bite than larger dogs because owners tend to overlook signs of ill behavior. They often go unreported because the little beasties don't do as much damage.

It is such a shame to hear the panicky ignorant talk of bans, when there are far more effective methods out there.

Pit Bulls make great family pets. They are adorable loveable animals.
Bad news breeders and nefarious owners are to blame for the bad reputation these dogs have in the media.

(I was almost afraid to read your posting) but BRAVO! 3 CHEERS! Can you imagine even ME a bonafide animal lover is afraid of them because of their bad rap? TSK TSK
But I agree wholeheartedly with you...as we all might have heard, even the dog on Little Rascals was an American Staffordshire Terrier (pitbull)!!!

Totally agree. The girl was at fault here.

The ban on pit bulls is ridiculous - they should ban irresponsible owners instead - and parents who don't teach their kids about staying off of other properties.

Anyone even moderately familiar with dogs knows that the breed matters not if the dog is abused or neglected and allowed to develop negative behavior patterns.

Since many people who intentionally possess threatening dogs, often those dogs are pit bulls or other breeds notorious for their ferocity (e.g., Rottweilers... formerly Dobermans were popular in this way). Therefore in fact there ARE a number of pit bulls out there who have not been properly trained and whose owners LIKE their aggressive misbehavior.

Nonetheless, the DOGS are not at fault.

If you ban irresponsible losers, you'll be doing something. There are therapy pit bills, search and rescue pit bulls, pit bulls that entertain crowds with their cool tricks, weight pull contestant pit bulls...there's nothing wrong with the breed. It is NOT fair to kill these responsibly owned and cared for dogs because some irresponsible losers use them for illegal activities or neglect to train and socialize them. In scientific study, the dachshund is the #1 biting breed. Never hear anyone wanting to ban the weenie dog, do you? Besides, if you ban the pit, then the irresponsible owners will move to rotties for illegal activities and to boost their own lowly machismo. Then you ban rotts, and they go to dogo Argentino, or presa Canario, or any other perfectly good breed, and ruin its reputation with their stupidity. Punish iresponsible, law-breaking, and negligent owners. Not the dogs that only learn what they are taught, or NOT taught.

HI PBL!!!! Long time no see? or should it be type? or speak? anyway, it's been some time since we corresponded with each other! I've been busy with shoveling, and catching up and working. Believe it or not, it's 3:20 Tues and it's the 1st chance I've got to check at least some of these postings, I can't contribute to the Springsteen forum cuz I didn't watch football (had to work part of the day anyway) and secondly can't STAND football, seems they line up and then fall on top of each other! Anyway, I'm glad that you & Mr Stfd are being nice to each other. I need for him to give me the website for the newslady-sounds like something funny to see! Have you noticed that COW and us have been having a go around with this religion thing? Have to Run. Finnley is still around, talked to the owner Sat. Thankfully she's alive & kicking! XXXXX

Oh Yes, Somehow I have to find the forum for the Deer, can you help me? Someone asked me some questions on Fri and I didn't have time to correspond. They were making some sort of comment that people shouldn't be WASTING their money on animals for their recovery, they should instead be spending it on education and homeless shelters and things of that sort, I couldn't wait for you to read that! Gee, I thought a majority of my tax money was going for that purpose (along with any other contributions I might have made!)
See, we are not entitled to help the critters-it's a WASTE of MONEY! Ba Humbug

Well there is a difference between a dog bite and a dog attack. Fortunately in this case it was only a dog bite. My brother in law has two pitbulls and they are gentle giants. But, I won't go in their yard by myself .. only when he or his wife are out there will I go.
