I think this is a remarkable way to bring attention, and hopefully the beginning of the end, of the use of a very mean and emotional term.

I have to say, in my 45+ years, I have heard many, many more black individuals use this word when "joking" or greeting their friends than I have heard whites use it. And...I am tired of comedians like Chris Rock using such language and labels and people accepting it as humor, but once a white person uses the language - like Imus - all of a sudden the media frenzy hits and we are back on the black vs. white debate and who can say what. The media is a dangerous place when it comes to inappropriate use of language and stereotypes, but once and for all - it is not appropriate for nonwhite individuals to mock or insult white OR black and other non-white groups just as much as it is not appropriate for white folks to do the same to non-white individuals. Look at what happened to Cho after years of bullying, prejudicial behaviors, and so on. And - for the record - gays, mentally ill and disabled individuals are probably treated just as, if not worse, than non-white individuals in this country and I have seen it come from all races, all ethnicities, all types of folks. There is no excuse for anyone to be mean or arrogant towards one another.

It is just not appropriate for anyone to use such labels, regardless of race, ethnicity, and so on. I hope I can see in my lifetime a point in humanity where we can all just accept each other for who we are, not excuse some people from saying things that others are chastized for the sake of entertainment value or because "it is okay for our 'people' to talk to each other like that", and finally accepting that in the human race their is absolutely no one who is more superior than the next person.

My diverse life has been beautiful and rewarding because I love people because they are people. Regardless of how much bad there is in the world, there is always much more good if people can get past materialism, hate, superiority, and ideas that you need more to have a good life. We are all given one life to live and why in the world do people want to waste it on issues that hurt others? Empower yourselves and enjoy your lives...when you reach the end of your life's journey, why in the world would anyone want to learn then that they spent more time being ignorant vs. loving and supportive of the human race? Pay more attention to your children...teach them that we are all on one planet...stop reinforcing to your children that we are white vs. black and black vs. white. My children never knew the difference until they started school and heard comments from fellow students and others that led them to believe that the differences were SO profound that instead of loving each other and accepting each other for who they were, they had to focus on specific things like skin tone and facial images.

It is 2007 people...and the world has become much more difficult for our children than it has ever been before. Let's stop confusing them and let's finally teach them that people are people. And...let's also accept that we cannot change every person when it comes to these issues so those who are passionate enough about it should just focus on the positive people and let the negative ones fester away in their own bubbles.

Susan - All your observations are spot on. You are an insightful, intelligent, wise, and truly compassionate person. Superior, even.

Susan,
Your feelings about humankind are so refreshing. If the world were perfect that is exactly the way we would treat one another. Unfortunately, our children are not surrounded by perfect people - not even perfect parents - but somehow we must learn to be content with discontent and stop lashing out at others whom we perceive to be our enemy and the cause of our discontentment.

So when are they going to bury words like honkey and cracker, or is it only the black people that are allowed to take offense. Until that happens, I still believe in my first amendment rights to use whatever words I choose to.

What about reverse racism?

The minorities are soon to be the majority, meaning there will be less whites than non-whites.

I wanted service at an Albany New York McDonalds. I waited as the lines on the other sides of me went along. The girl went on break, took my McChicken in the back instead of just pulling it out and giving it to me. I threw it out and did not eat it. I was the only White in the franchise and walking downtown I got the taste of what it would be like being the only minority in a racist area.

I had the same problem in Waterbury Connecticut at a McDonalds. Extremely slow service because I was White. The food was not taken in the back, so I ate it.

I have gone to an all African American BBQ smoke houses in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and even Wilmington Delaware where the food was more than good and the service excellent. I was the only White face to be seen.

I think it is the government's best interest that we all not get along.

One voice could then ask how much of my money are you spending and on what. What would George W. Bush and Co. have for an answer?

Having a funeral for a word is the height of stupid, symbolic exhibitionism.

To Liz and The Courant:
Thank you for covering this event. I am white. I was brought up in a family where our neighbors were a diverse group. We grew up together. We loved each other. My father would have whopped my xxxx if I ever used a any derogatory word about any of our neighbors, friends, relatives (my family is quite diverse), let alone about strangers.

I believe that this article is the first time I've seen the so-called "n-word" spelled out in over a decade, oh, wait, I forgot thr lyric sheets to my rap records which make Don Imus' comments look like Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream " Speech. The word "Hypocrisy" comes to mind.

Good riddance to these words. Black people think that it's OK if it is coming from another black person. But that doesn't make it OK. It only means that the degradation is coming from within the family. It's still no less degrading.

Blacks keep changing what they want to be called every decade or so because eventually they find the current term racist.Negro is a racist word now, along with "black","colore d" etc.Has it ever occcurred to anyone that the image of black hip-hop culture to most whites is fairly repulsive and goes to great lengths to alienate itself from mainstream America. So far "People of Color" is the funniest term the liberal establishment has ever come up with.I'm a white guy and I have a color. So that makes me a person of color too,I guess. Here's a pretty safe and non-offensive suggestion:Humanoid unit of elevated melatonin skin pigmentation.Or how about trying just plain ole' Americans, you bone-headed liberals.

Most of the comments I have read thus far make tremendous sense. I do agree, that all derogatory terms should be eliminated but when it comes to African Americans I feel it has to start internally and with our young people who have become so infected with it. This is a major task for them to take on and if any real progress is to be made, it will have to come from them, as well as, the young people of all other races.

Why is this so hard to figure out? Paul said it perfectly fine, "But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips" (Colossians 3:8) If such words are interpreted as such depending on the speaker, does the meaning ACTUALLY change?

I totally agree. The labels are stupid. My white husband was born in Africa and he is more "African/American" than the majority of the blacks in the US. We are all Americans, but for some reason we all have to be catagorized.
