There should be a death penalty for this level of stupidity. It's one thing to be making meth and risking one's own life, but to risk multiple lives and the household properties of those around you is an offense that merits the hangman's noose. Every few months we hear of another example of this level of stupidity. Why house these cretins in prison for years, then turn them out? Thin the herd!

How is it that someone can have a meth. lab in an apartment and nobody smells it?
I moved away from Dsm. for 4yrs and just moved back. All I see is a bunch of Meth. addicts running around with rotten teeth and crooked jaws.
When is someone going to do something about the drug problem in Dsm?

I wonder what happens to the ones displaced due to this. You can't tell me they Just made the lab this had to be there for a while to get this far. How many times has the Cops been called to this apartment and how many times has tennats complained about the trafic to that apartment. You can tell management that drug deals are going on but unless they personaly see it they want do anything. Hmm Now there are a Dozen people forced out of their homes
This is why i would like to see Management do surprise Inspections on Apartments and ocaasionaly have a drug Dog come. WE are told we need a 100,000 renter Insurance policy if we own a dog or a Satalite OK No problem. But they really need to be more careful who they let in. Due to things like this Happeneing.

My little sister lost everything in this fire. Including all of my nieces things and picture and ultrasound pictures. She was at the doctors office down the street finding out that shes now 4 1/2 weeks pregnant with her second child and she has nothing anymore! If anyone who reads this wants do donate any clothing or anything at all please let me know. Just email me at Thank you!

While I agree that managers should check apartments for issues, there are such things as rights to privacy. However, I have no idea how someone could be cooking up meth for any duration of time without someone knowing it or reporting it to the police before today. Apartment buildings are close quartered enough that someone should have reported the smell before now unless today just happened to be the unlucky cookers first day attempting the experience.

now THAT'S funny

How could you think this is funny? People lost their homes. Everything they own is now gone. My sister lost priceless things in this fire that can never be replaced. I know everyone has different opinions but please consider the feelings of the people who now have nothing.

Kristi, so sorry for your sister's loss. She should have been contacted by the Red Cross. In case she got missed, have her contact them. They are a good resource to get things restarted. They have funds to provide temporary housing (motels) and meals. Because of the ether used in Meth making it is so votile that an explosion wipes out everything. How sad and scary for the other tenants. There are several good apartments in Altoona. Cheap and they do background checks and if someone who lives there is questionable they were gone. They were cheap enough I could live there and commute to Des Moines. They also have bus service to Altoona. Alot less crime there. Hope all goes well for her.

It goes to show that these drug crazed people have no regared for themselve or those around them. I hope that they get the get the maximum the law allows so they can never do these again.

Obviously the millions of dollars that we spend on drug prevention, intervention and crime is having "no" effect. I guess it makes us feel good but the abuse of drugs, both illegal and legal, is the major aspect of our present society. The majority of criminal acts in this nation are directly contributed to drug and alcohol use. Stop wasting money on prevention and treatment programs that don't work...turn it all over to the medical community and use the research that shows that alcohol and drug abuse can be "cured" not fostered by ineffective programs....AA and NA don't work and if they did...this apartment building would still be standing...

Army Wife... please learn to spell. It is absolutely horrifying to read such a terrible post. It is sad that you have kids and they probably won't be able to spell either. Instead of looking at apartments, maybe you should go look at trailers.

You must be very dumb. Could you please diagram your one long sentence for me? This area of town has been taken over by the free darkys and their welfare living style. Should have let the other buildings burned down so they would all move to another area. How about back to the jungles of Africa where they came from. Heck, I bet that either drugs or taxpayers make 75% of the rental payments on Chaffee road. If this statement offends you, you are guilty as charged!!
