Little Bo Peep has no school
It's been gone sense the fall

They closed the doors
And killed the town

Its the end of poor St. Paul

Soon it will be coeburn’s turn,
As all should surly know,
Why bother to keep it open,
There’s a new one up the road,

Who cares if the bus ride is long
Who cares what they think
As long as it new and grand
Lets toast and have a drink

The bills we’ll send to the taxpayers
They really don’t mind at all,
We’ll tax em blind and close their jobs
They approved it last fall

So run Bo peep
As fast as you can
To a place far from here,

Where you can find work
And have a real life
Don’t look back nor shed a tear.

I don't think that building new schools will bring new jobs. My point is that noboby in this area wants change. They are so content with what little this area has to offer, and will fight to keep it this way. Why is this area so afraid of change? Why is it when a family moves into this area from out of state they are shunned or treated like they have the plague? There is a reason companies give incentives for employees to transfer here. I would say that in the last 10 years the only thing that has came to this area is the Wall Mart and all the little nickel and dime stores along with them.
Hopefully new schools will help in educating our children and give them the tools necessary to go elsewhere and be successful.
And yes I believe new schools will help. It is no different than working in a poor environment, productivity usually struggles. Take the same people and put them in a better work environment and productivity always strives.
I don't know about working at the Norton Inn. All I can say is that an advanced education has paid for itself. I have never been afraid to take a chance, or even pack up and move for my company in a weeks notice. I just hope that the children take full advantage of school, and continue with an advanced education. Don't settle for the norm, and think because it has been done that way for years that it's OK.
I will agree with you on one point, we the students will be going elsewhere. Not from the tools that came from wcps, but from a desire to be as far away from this backstabbing group of thugs as possible. I am not alone, they may not tell it outright but many in my class are leaving come summer as well. The way this was shoved down on us was tacky thoughtless and downright cruel. In my twelve years at Coeburn I have had some great teachers, who worked hard and gave their best. You could not have asked for better. Surprisingly many of them did not support the move by the school board, they were not outspoken about it due to fear of reprisals from the powers in charge. The teachers who were outspoken about wanting new new new, from my experiences are the ones who were some of the worst teachers in the system. I would be very surprised if some of them could pass the same SOL's they are giving us to take. I have seen that its easier to make excuses for why you can't teach than it is to improve your teaching methods esp. if that means going back to school yourself. But you can believe whatever you like just don't be surprised if you find out your children might graduate but are still ill-equipped for either college or the work force. If you don't believe this just ask around at the colleges in this area, MECC, UVA Wise, VT, ETSU, ask them directly what level of education do the applicant's from Wise County posses when they apply and actually start classes, see what percentage of these 'grads' have to back up and take basic courses just to try to catch up. Its not buildings that teach its good old fashion teachers that want their students to be successful.

If anyone group is settling for the norm, its the parents who think that their kids will magically be educated by new buildings.

The ones that thought up this consolidation crap have been out of school so long that the hardest drug talked about was weed.If they really had the kids in mind then it would have never been brought up. Kids will be knocked out of sports because the coach can only accept a limited amount of player's and the ones that would get better in time will never have the chance. It will be that way 4 every sport and activity. There will be more fighting and everything else x10.I say fix up the old and add on if u have 2 but not combined
hey around here most of the kids are on teams becuse they are qualified but if they dont have money to back them up and keep them on the team they dont play in the games.. been that way a long time and if someone says they kids tha play dont have money like that...their parents get out and others and get them sponsors..so if you are from a single home and good at sports u dont play first string...u are not a star. so that is no excuse to stop progress and another thing encourage ur kids to go for the educaiton not to play...duh..u cant all be allstars making the mega bucks....u need an education..grow up think like an adult

Your' right the kids need an education, sadly the consolidation was not and is not about education, just new sports facilities.

I must disagree, the consolidation is about certain schools sport programs, you may not want to accept that but it is the root push behind this. Follow the meetings of the School Board. Listen to the discussions and what tops the list of concerns. Its not at all about a better education, but about better gyms, practice fields and new arenas for sporting events. The facts don't lie or mislead the way so many others have. You are very correct that monies are disappearing, the state and fed. funds that were diverted to Russell county from the students that transferred from St. Paul alone are staggering. Of course you will not hear that discussed. That is just one of the little dirty secretes they keep under the rug. As for meeting the future needs of the kids, a one way ticket out of here to a place with some common sense would be a more practical ideal.

I would like to see all sports stopped at school and concentrate on their education. Prepare the kids for the adult life, forget sports, teach them what work ethics is all about. The games I have been to is a freaking joke anyway, parents in the stands yelling and screaming at the ref's, all you do is teach bad sportsmanship anyway.

I think wise should not get a new school. They think they are better then any body but there not just because they get to use uva for sports that needs to stop I hate the way things are going in the school board. They need to get gram out of there he is there for the money not the kids

Ok, then who should get a new school? You are so full of ugly things to say but no answers. That seems to be the way people are on here. I'm from Wise but I have had no say so in what's going on. You all want to hate everybody from Wise but you need to realize that its not our fault that the school board office is in Wise. I am so sick of being blamed just because I live in Wise! If you have such great ideas then maybe you should run for school board and quit complaining on here.

I only speak for myself, but I am so sick and tired of hearing WISE WISE WISE I could just scream. Its not all of you, its only the loud mouths who can't let anything be. Both Boards, school and supervisor think that Wise county starts at BSG and then curves around Norton then ends at Wise MT. Every other part of the county is somewhere they wish did not exist. They are more than happy to take our tax dollars, taxing on every car, home, outbuilding anything they can get away with, but other than that, they don't care what happens. Look at the money that was supposed to be for the whole county that gets diverted to wise. the money wasted on that old wise inn, that should have been bulldozed years ago. your fancy little circle at the court house, the rebuilding of Wise's main street. All with grants and funds from the coal severance tax. What has App. Pound, St. Paul Coeburn or anywhere else gotten? the bills. How freaking hard would it have been to have taken just a fraction of the tax dollars from the power plant and allowed St Paul's school to remain open? They are the ones who have to see, hear and smell it every day. I'm glad its here, but the people who live next too it get nothing, while the taxes go to wise to build new ball courts and ball fields for your precious warriors. Well they still can't play sports, and the rest of the county is about fed up with Wise in general.

Where else would they put it? Not saying that Wise is perfect, but Norton and Pound is nothing but a crap hole. Why would anyone want to put it there?

Norton is what it is, As for the rest of the county? Its in the shape that it is, due to the fact that the "rest of the county" has been bleed dry by wise to fund all of their pet projects. When's the last time you've seen any funds being used outside of wise? you won't. they have planned it that way for years. Put the public housing in Coeburn, the power plant in ST Paul, divert all the funds for improvements to wise and wise alone. Its been calculated and planned. I can't wait to watch the scramble when the coal severance tax dries up and projects like the INN set empty and broke.

I would like to see a new grocery store in the Castlewood area. If that happens there will be no reason to cross the bridge into wise county.

Cuts will come this summer, lots of GOOD teachers will be cut. If Norton comes in even more will be cut. Most did go to Castlewood, only a few came to Coeburn, Lee did pick the colors and whole lot. He must be one big. MI Fan. He helped kill the town schools and got rewarded in the process, maybe a life long dream of his.
