The reason this article is here is that Susan Hutchison is a former director of the DIscovery Institute. While that should not disqualify her, it should mean an investigation into her support of hte DI's Center for Science and Culture and her position on education, particularly science education and Evolution should be examined before the election.

I disagree for a number of reasons.
.
But those reasons aside, if this state were to simply DUMP the publik skewel sistim and go completely private, then various and numerous choices would become the order of the day, affording both the children AND their parents a robust and optimal education suitable to their choices.
.
Aside from that, there are just too many left-wing extremists serving on the council, whose only goal in life is to milk the bejesus out of the citizen to pay for onerous stupid project and programs which should —right along with the publik skewel sistim— get dumped, PERMANENTLY.
.

Gotta love idiots like this who think that private corporations are going to be better shepards of public funds.

Just like Walmart, Exxon and Enron, they don't have the public interest at heart. They are after profit - that's their JOB.

Destroying the public school system in order to ensure that SOME children will have a good private school education will result in MOST children having little to no education at all.

Children are NOT evenly distributed geographically or economically.

The BEST plan you could come up with is giving the ACTUAL schools to these corporations. Sort of like how these same corps have done such an excellent job mining and grazing on public lands, looting the Public wealth for the benefit of a few individuals.

Typical dumbass conservative planning. Works great for the people calling the shots, since they know the rank and files are just too stupid to understand they are voting AGAINST their own interests.

It would be laughable if it wasn't for the fact that these idiots can hurt our children with their stupid suggestions.

I disagree with you. There are problems with the public school system, but you don't fix them by teaching religion as if it were science. You want kids only taught what is inline with their parents belief? So down in California we should offer Masters in Astrology? That is what you are advocating, whether you realize it or not. I know a bigot down in Louisiana, so we should teach the South won the civil war and racism isn't wrong? I know a NY'er who believes that if it isn't tied down, it belongs to whomever wants it, so larceny should be on the curriculum?

If we are going to teach science, we should teach science! School is not to make sure you believe what your parents believed, but to help prepare you for the rest of your life. Anything less is a disservice. Yes, there are real problems in public school, but re-making the curriculum to suit one particular belief system is not an answer to any of them. You can pull your kids out of public school right now, and send them to the private school of your choice. But be careful, the majority of them teach Evolution in science class and leave Creationism to Theology.

GOT PROOF of ~that~ assertion?
.
Before the so-called 'publik skewel sistim' came about, American children were the best educated in the world.
.
On Fact, in the very early days of the American Republic, Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet) remarked that in his travels about the new nation, that Americans and their children were the best educated people in the world, and that not since ancient Greece were such people to be found anywhere.
.
Gee, imagine that: ALL WITHOUT A PUBLIK SKEWEL SISTIM.
.
ALL WITHOUT SOAKING THE PEOPLE WITH ONEROUS TAXATION.

This would work if the government paid for the kids tuition and if the kids met state set standards. If we made this a pay-to-play system then most families could not afford the 10-20,000 yearly tuition. That is how much the states currently shell out per student, if memory serves.

We can't go back to a system where only the rich get an education. The middle class would disappear quickly.

Allow me to ask: What gives you to think that the current costs are in any way the ACTUAL costs?
.
Would it surprise you to discover that FULLY 50% of the current costs are in NON-EDUCATIONAL overhead?
.
Most school districts are so top-heavy in staff and unnecessary services that just getting rid of the school district staff itself would MORE THAN cover the costs of a really good education.
.
Allow ME to ask YOU: Have YOU ever given a gander at YOUR school district's cost ledger, with a breakdown of EVERYTHING?

Being the "best" at something is more an indicator of the competition than the quality of the victor.

Truthfully, I don't know and I doubt that you do either. Have you gone through school budgets? I haven't. If someone is able to show where money is being wasted then I will fully support them in trying to change things. However, I am not going to assume malfeasance until it is evidenced.
Would it surprise you to discover that FULLY 50% of the current costs are in NON-EDUCATIONAL overhead?
What does this include? Building maintenance? After school programs? What exactly?
Most school districts are so top-heavy in staff and unnecessary services that just getting rid of the school district staff itself would MORE THAN cover the costs of a really good education.
What happens when we replace this system with corporations who are are to make money? I don't see this as an improvement. If the government is running things then there are democratic processes that allow for reform. This can't be done with a corporate run system. When the choice is between cost and education the corporations will choose cost every time. That is not a good way to do things.
Allow ME to ask YOU: Have YOU ever given a gander at YOUR school district's cost ledger, with a breakdown of EVERYTHING?

Can't say that I have. Have you ever taken a gander at the massive profits that insurance companies make at the expense of patient care? Something to think about. Have you ever seen how top heavy CEO pay is? If you think current salaries are a burden, take a look at corporate America.

Yes, I have. But it was like pulling teeth: They would NOT allow me to see the cost runout because —THEY SAID— it would be too revealing of personal information.
.
I cried fowl and filed charges against them and guess what: They relented. You'd be SURPRISED at the salaries some of those blood suckers are collecting, while the actual money spent on education is paltry by comparison.

We've had government fingers in the pie since the latter part of the 19th Century, and 'things' have been going down hill ever since.

Well, since you are wont to change the subject in an attempt to deflect attention from YOUR faulted argument, then LET US quickly evaluate the matter of insurance.
.
Real fast: It was as a result of GOVERNMENT MEDDLING in the insurance business that the costs have become excessive.
.
Further, it is DIRECTLY as a result of GOVERNMENT STUPIDITY in attempting to duplicate corporate maneuvering in the private sphere of things.

Highlander, if I might provide some constructive feedback, you read like a raving lunatic.

If you have a case or argument to present, just present it. It should be strong enough to stand upon it's own merits without you having you fluff it up with meaningless rants, ad hominem attacks and sentences in block capitals.

These are the actions of a child, not an intelligent adult.
