Wishing for a new day

When Ted Kennedy passed away,(and now Arlen Specter) I often wonder whether our congress will ever return to the days of the statesman, when real debate and compromise was viewed as their job. I respect those who are unafraid to speak up and give good arguement--whether it is agreed upon or not. Debate is healthy and it should be bipartisan and openly discussed.
I am outraged over the agreement signed by the Rep. to forgo business up until they get their way with the tax issue. Bipartisanship is working together and doing what is best for the country and it is OK if that is what they truly believe but then why were they so afraid that they had to sign something??
Politics has really turned into a dirty, sneaky business. Why in the world are they permitted insider trading? Hey, even if it wasn't illegal, what does that say about character? It's much like campaign financing, trade deficits, special interests, etc.--they are all against these issues but nothing is ever done about them. Just a lot of puffery to make us believe they are "honorable".
I don't like to take the side of pesimism, however, I wonder what it's going to take to get things back to functionable again so that we can become united in this country once again and restore respect of our congress.
