I stumbled upon this topic looking for something else. I live in Duquesne, I have never had a problem with any of the police officers. I'll admit they are a bit guarded and slightly macho, but look at what they have to deal with! Wouldn't you be? I don't do crimes, therefore I don't have to deal with the police other than saying hi at the gas station. I don't associate with anyone in this city, or frequent any bars, and I'll admit I'm actually scared to. Not because of the police, but because of all the thugs that think since they live in Duquesne that they can just be crack/heroin dealers and all that happy, ghetto mentality shit. I live in a pretty quiet section, nothing really happens here, but a few sections of the town truly need a low level nuke dropped on them. 97% of Crawford St. should be bulldozed to the ground. Not to mention Second St, but at the rates the houses are burning down it shouldn't be long until most of those dumps are gone.(5000 people in the whole city, and at least one big fire per night) I believe that years of political corruption and greed have led to the town being what it is now. Right now I think an effort is being made to try and right the wrongs that have been going on for decades. Just my opinion, but I hope they start to double their efforts on knocking down more abandoned houses before worrying about building new ones. I have one next to me that has been an eye sore for over 10 years. It attracts a bad element, and gangs of kids that obviously have nothing better to do than break windows and be nuisances(obviously they don't have homework, or parents that care where they are at 12am on a school night). Some people really try to make the most of their property, but it's all in vain if you live next to an abandoned dump that criminals are using for a crack house. The efforts on the old U.S. Steel sight are a step in the right direction. If you want to see corruption, focus your efforts to the school district and figure out why almost $10,000 is spent on each student, yet their grades are some of the lowest in the country. Duquesne can be what it once was, farmland. And we would all be better for it.

My family immigrated to Duquesne in the early 1900's, and created this city from hard-work and deciation. After the mills closed down and like any faltering city would, it became less and less desirable to reside because there's nothing left. Recently, I've personally seen improvments to the city and especially over in Duquesne Place. Good, honest people for the most part are settling down in this area and I think that's where it all starts.
City officials/police need to keep a tough, yet respected image. Citizens need to follow the rules, because honestly respect is something you earn, it's not an entitlement.
I think allowing prayer back in the schools is a good start. Optional community service should be offered to each individual residing in Duquesne and more community events held throughout the city.
