Everyone can't wait until a powerline is built in their backyard.

Even with goverment subsidies, tax-breaks and power companies being FORCED to build windpower generators, it is no where near cost-effective. If it were cost-effective, utilities would be gladly building wind farms on their own without government mandates. Your claim that it is only marginally more expensive than coal-fired electricity is false. There is also tremendous waste with windpower because the same yahoos like Wellstone that has forced it through law upon us will not allow power lines to be built to transport the electricity where it can be used. A huge portion of the capacity is wasted because of the lack of power lines.
Makes a lot more sense to at least TRY to be energy independent to me. Plus look at the disaster in the gulf.

According to Wikipedia, the US currently generates about 2% of its annual usage from wind power but the U.S. is on a trajectory to generate 20% of the nationís electricity by 2030 from wind energy.

That's a lot of imported or domestic oil we won't need.

You can't require people to be patriotic - although most people are.

Yes, but it isn't cost effective. The only reason it's being done by utilities is because of laws forcing them to do it. What we need is further technology advances in magnetics and superconductivity to increase the efficiency of electricity and its transmission. I realize we need to continue to research and develop wind power, but with current technology, it isn't the answer that all the greenies believe it is and until we build more transmission lines, it pointless to continue to build large windfarms. How many times have you driven by the windfarms on a breezy day and find them motionless?

cap n tax makes Windmills possible.....if we don't use the oil and coal another country will be happy to take it plus all of our jobs with them.
