Do we really need to kill the animal? I think a tranq would have been just fine to capture the bear.

God forbid they tranquilize and transport it out of the area and release it.

it seems silly to me that they shot the bear , rather than tranquilize it and relocate it . shooting the bear ,just seems like a lazy uncaring way to handle the situation .

Sad, but kind of hilarious there was a bear near my house. That's never happened before!

This bear. I agree to tranq it, but things move so fast when you are trying to control a wild animal and the public. I can imagine that the fastest way to secure things was to dispatch it. If the thing was rabid and bit someone then there would be heck to pay by the police dept. What to do?

They shot the bear so it would not return. I think it was heading to White Bear Lake and got turned around.

How far was it killed from the big fake white bear ? The killing makes me ashamed to wear the No St Paul letter jacket with a bear on it. Rename the teams from Polar Bears to Obit Bears...

I am an outdoorsman but I do have a problem with the outcome of this situation. I don't feel the police have jurisdiction in this matter. This should fall under the jurisdiction of the DNR. I feel killing the animal just because it was in a residental area is off the deep end. Let th DNR take care of the situation, use a tranqulizer to sedate it and then put it in a cage to relocate as long as it was not sick. The DNR should be ableto determine that as well. That is there JOB! Taking CARE of our natural resources.

"Why couldn't they just pour gasoline on him and light him on fire?"

Or tase him? Oh -- maybe if he was in a wheelchair.

A bear drew a crowd? Sure, cool to see, but if you're going to get up close to it you most certainly deserve to be attacked! I'm so very happy to hear that there's no issue firing a weapon with this huge crowd of idiots that needed protection. Remember, initial call came at 9:00 am meaning the bear wasn't shot until after school started.

Yes, tranquilizer would have been a better option...but what do I know?

I see how it is- I wonder if they would have been so quick to shoot if it was a polar bear.

There were apparently dozens of onlookers closeby the bear. There was a danger of the bear becoming agitated and attacking a citizen, that's why the bear was dispatched. You people who think a tranquilizer is the answer have watched too much television. They don't knock out the animal as fast as you seem to think. Tranquilizers cannot be carried in every patrol car. By the time the necessary drugs are acquired from a veternarian, the situation may have changed and they cannot wait that long. Plus, we have lots of black bears. It's not like they shot a whooping crane or a unicorn.

So da coppers plugged my little buddy huh ? Bad anuff da got a season to kill us but now this calls for war. da little guy had a name like we all do, we knew him as
" Milk Bottle " Bear. He was addicted on the milk cartons found around the dempsters at the schools. If da places were cleaned up then Milk Bottle would have gone back to the woods. it is you humans fault.

This is clearly another case of racial profiling! If this was a WHITE bear, it would've just received a stern warning and been released!

To MN observer, The bear was in a tree because it was scared from all the people. Bears do that! The bear was no longer the threat it was earlier in the morning. I guess we can layoff all the animal control officers, veternarians and the DNR because the police can handle it all. It appears the DNR was near by because they now have the DEAD animal. Like I said before I am an outdoorsman. The police stepped out of bounds. They do have radios to call for backup even if it is another department that actually knows how to handle the situation.

I feel sorry for the kids at school, knowing that the bear was shot.

Why didn't the DNR handle this? From what I understand, the bear was in the tree for quite a while.

I think this is awful. I can't believe they shot and killed the bear. Couldn't they just call animal control and have them find a way to trap it - how about a tranquilizer? The poor thing was probably scared out of its mind. And I can't imagine how traumatic it was to have everyone watching as the police officers shot and killed it right in from of everyone.

I completely disagree with shooting this bear. We have done nothing but destroy their habitat and force them out into the open, only to shoot and kill them when they have no where else to go. UNBELIEVABLE. Why couldn't the bear have been relocated. We are such selfish human beings as far as I'm concerned.
