Its all about money, the longer we "media" get paid to pay tribute to her on the radio or tv shows the longer her family sells cds, posters, and other memorabilia. It's the way the entertainment industry is.$$$$$$$$$ money talks bullshit walks

Selena was no saint... just a singer. No one is saying she's a saint or that anyone should worship her. She was a wonderful, beautiful, and talented singer that was taken from this earth too soon. She had a huge fan base from young to old, so i'm sure those people wouldn't have any grievances on honoring her.Elvis has been dead for decades and we are constantly reminded of his death, birthday, and his accomplishments. I'm not a fan of either one of them, but no one should make the decision on who we should remember or how.

If you want to honor an artist, listen to their music, or buy their movies, or whatever. But the people themselves? They're no better than any of the rest of us. I don't think they deserve statues, or buildings named after them. Great thinkers and leaders- people that contribute to the betterment of society or social movements -they are the ones that deserve monuments and days of remembrance.

Wow, you people have no respect for the dead. Whether or not she was a pioneer has nothing to do with the fact that she was a human being who had and still has a family and fans who will treasure her for years to come. She impacted many and touched hearts through out the world. One day out of the year is not going to hurt anyone, i hope that when it is your time to go that someone will remember you and want to keep your memory alive. God bless you all.........

I'll agree to the one day out of the year tribute if we can get rid of her name off the Bayfront Auditorium and remove that ridiculous hooker-ish statue of her down by the water. I hope when it's my day to go they name a Walmart, HEB or an Academy after me to keep my memory alive! And by the way, no one sneezed on this forum.

She did mean something to many people. Even kids who weren't alive at the time of her death see her as a role model. There isn't anything wrong with honoring someone who's made a difference to you individually and to a community as a whole. Besides, people remember and honor those who've been gone FAR longer than she has. If you don't like it, just don't pay attention to it. But at least be respectful, it's the least you can do.

Didn't the city have to remove or replace some of the benches and railing because "mourners" would leave "messages." And by "messages," I mean graffiti.

It's misplaced affection and more than a little weird to worship celebrity that way. She was a good musician with a big butt... that's not reason enough to erect a statue.

The King Elvis Presley has been dead for several years and there is a big anniversary event at Grace Land on the anniversary of his death and the anniversary of his birthday, so why not bitch about that issue also!

She was part of the being of Latinos to make it into the big labels. And yes it is time to move on and let others like her we shall remember for whatever their contribution has been to the arts.

Get a grip people. It's embarassing to see my people gushing over Selena. Face it, she really wasn't that great. Outside of the tejano community no one knew who the heck she was. I agree with other posters, there were far more important people. She was just a singer, is this the best we could do Corpus?

As the quote goes "I would rather have people ask me why I don't have a statue in my honor than to ask me why I have a statue?" Her family is still milking her fame long after she has passed away! Please, it is time to let her rest in peace!

Every time I hear a Song by Selena on the radio I just switch to another station! I mean, how many times can you take any of her songs over and over again?

That is the way to become rich!

I lived in Corpus Christi for a couple of years a few years back.I have to tell you it's no cookie cutter city. It has a culture all it's own. The cult of Selena is just one aspect of it - and is one of the things that endears me about it. That and the peculiar form of Spanglish that is spokien there.

Move On Corpus wrote: <quoted text> I'm not trying to take anything away from her, believe me. But to be fair, it's not just one day a year. I mean, there's a statue of her downtown. And, let's not forget the "Selena Auditorium" named for her. My personal gripe is that I bet more kids in Corpus, or all of South Texas for that matter, know more about her than they do people like Dr. Hector Garcia. Who the hell is Dr. Hector Garcia? Is he Fidel Castros's personal Doctor or is he another weeping heart liberal who wants to weaken our country with feel good quotes of good things to come. Anyway Selena was a great piece of ass and should be remembered a such. The statue does her ass no justice, it should have been more rounder and fuller.
