This is beyond stupid. Even for PITA people. The liberal folk have now gone beyond all common sense. I am for all rattle snakes living in the desert were they belong. Rattle snakes do have a purpose in nature out in the desert and in their natural habitat but they should not be allowed to be keept as pets. These repitals were never intended to be pets. It is an issue that is beyond insane for our govement officials to consider. I would like to know who are the goverment folks that are even considering this issue so that I can talk to their superiors and see that they can be replaced with more responsible people. Tom Miller

You'll want to revise your article. Rattlesnakes don't lay eggs. They are viviporous, meaning they give birth to live young. This makes them easier to breed because there are no eggs to incubate.

Are you kidding me? What about the safety of rescue personel or innocent children in the home or unknowing visitors? This is the dumbest idea I've ever heard and I can't believe the Division of Wildlife Resources is even giving the proposal any serious consideration. Common sense is extinct!

this is idiotic. i didn't realize that there was a huge movement of people in utah wanting to keep rattlesnakes. that people are keeping them already illegally is no reason. if people are using illegal drugs, should we make them legal?

Making rattlesnake ownership legal will do nothing but make more rattlesnake fatalities. There was a death here in Southern Utah in 1987 from a so called professional rattlesnake handler. Stevie Kirkwood would have been 25 this year.
This bill cannot and should not pass.

Wait... what does that have to do with PETA or liberals? The only thing that's liberal here is your flexibility with how the English language is spelled.

Can you find one article or instance, anywhere, even in states where this has been legal for years, where rescue personnel have been attacked by a well-kept venomous snake?

The requirements of previous experience and room security should be the issue of concern. The word "pet" is not good here, as people who keep rattlesnakes seldom see them this way. There are many people who have the experience, training, and resources to keep them perfectly safely.

On the other hand, idiots are everywhere, and they're already keeping them. A well enforced license system would be ideal, and would encourage safety and give the DWR very useful knowledge about who these people are, what they have, and whether or not they are a threat.

the point is, they're venomous and should be kept in the wild

I was born and raised in Utah and now live in Arizona and must say, I don't understand the negative attitude that some of you are showing. There are more people injured and killed by dogs or cats every year than are injured or killed by reptiles in general. I have kept reptiles for the last several years and as of last August I have began keeping venomous animals. I also have a 6 year old child and his welfare is always our highest priority with any pet we have. For those who enjoy it, it is a very rewarding experience and for those who do not enjoy it, you don't have to keep them.

From what the article states, there will be a state licenses required and you will have to have a secure room and a sturdy cage to contain these animals and city laws will have the ability to prevent the keeping of these animals within city limits.

Killed by cats, really?

Aside from that, your 'statistic' is probably somewhat accurate, only because these animals are kept in the wild, the woods, where most humans DONT to venture out to; therefore, there are not as many reported injuries or deaths.

I applaud you for being a responsible pet owner,
however ludicrous it is to have a snake around a 6 year old.

To each their own, though.

I had no idea that a cat could kill a human! I have never heard of anybody being attacked by there cat, but a Mountain Lion is the one that would kill you. So, just out of curriosity; does that mean that I have to watch out for my ferrets?

Another thing pitbulls are being killed because they have a bad rap. by people when it is not the dog but the HOMOSAPIANS that are training them to KILL. They are CONTROLED. Should I be afraid to buy a bunny? I had a wolf and she was just fine, but a snake you cannot train to attack and not to attack people. A rattle snake is a weapon that should not be allowed as pets. Ya'll bring up really good points about why and why not to own them, but we are talking about a snake that is a danger to the handler and everyone around them. How many people do you hear about that have been attacked by their five foot python? Snakes are not pets, and they should be treated with the greatest respect!
