Chelmsford changes SPED transport

Full story: Lowell Sun

For the first time in 26 years, special-needs transportation is changing. In a 4-1 vote last night, the School Committee supported severing its longtime relationship with Town & Country Transportation and ...

It must be the new English! If that's what you got out of what's quoted above then maybe it would be you that is best served by a course in reading comprehension.

I work for North Reading Transportation and we are currently being approached by The Teamsters and it looks like eventually we will join the union and your 3 year contract will then be null and void and then the sh*t is going to hit the fan and it will cost you all so much more in taxes and for transport. Every thread here with the exception of 1 doesn't have a clue about this business. So your gonna get what you deserve! I am glad I don't live in your town.

There is no $200K saving. What Yoeman & Cruikshank didn't present was all the add on cost with North Reading: Chel will pay them extra every time there is a change order (a very frequent occurrance) & Town & Country did not charge , Cruikshank already pays N.Reading an extra $5k a month above their present contract out of a contingency fee - Town & Country gets 0: Chel just added a new 'Transportation Coordinator' position (@70K yr)- Town & Country did this service for 0 extra cost. N. Reading will get additional $ for the bus moniters needed for safety - Town & Country didn't require them. No Reading turnover rate = 10%, Town & Country= 0%. N. Reading drivers can have a criminal record & esl is no problem. So when all is said & done there will probably be 0 savings, we will be stuck with a company about to be enveloped in a nasty union fight & the most vulnerable kids in the schools will be at risk. Great job Duffett, Taranto, Walsh & Porter.

Ok.
$750 for activities +$600 for sports =$800?
Take your kids out of sports and activities and use the money to go to night school and take an arithmatic class.
No stupid, three separate fees -$800 and $600 and $750. Total $1450. Did I get it right? Your sarcasm isn't appreciated or warranted. I'm on your side with regard to taxes and spending.

I don't pay any of those fees and you call me stupid? If you weren't living proof that overrides don't help I would have accepted your apology.

Taxpayer, you're an ass. What the hell is your problem with me? Did I do something to offend you above and beyond the typo? Duh obviously understood me. And so does any other parent who lives in Chelmsford. I'm sorry you don't understand the fee schedule for next September. You must not live in Chelmsford, which would explain why you didn't get the memo in May.

Are we missing something? Overrides don't help. Tax increases don't help. Misappropriation, waste, uniona and skyrocketing administrative fees should have been addressed. The fees are punitive in nature and are not the answer because they only address the shortfall this fiscal year.

Can you tell me what we disagree on that causes you to be such a caustic, sarcastic jerk?

No one is happy to live here, lately. SPED parents, Town and Country drivers, parents of school children, "VOTE NO Override" people, "One Chelmsford" pro-override people, Seniors losing their activities and meals at the Senior Center, regular public school children and parents, anybody who drinks water in Chelmsford (especially North Chelsmford)...

I'll let you in on a secret. I think that the schools are really hurting, they need more resources. We are falling so far behind the rest of the world that it isn't even funny. The problem is, was, will always be, money. Until the way education is funded is changed then nothing else will. No overrides, more fees, more disgrace. You can't get blood from a stone.

And I quote, "Overrides don't help. Tax increases don't help."

And yeah, the traffic sucks.

just wait and see
It's a shame that the parents and children will suffer when this fails. If Cruikshank thinks he can transport ALL of these children on 7 busses safely and on time he must be smokin crack! It's not possible! They WILL have to use some mini vans and he knows it. They will have to use more than 7 busses and he also knows this. They will need bus moniters and he knows they will. SPED children are required by law to be picked up at the door and we have a few children who have driveways that the short bus will no be able to navigate. They will have to send a mini van. If they refuse, LAWSUIT! If they think they can pick up 12 children that live in different sections of town in under an hour they have never driven in Chelmsford. I can promise you these parents will have stopwatches in hand and will be following these busses to school. The parents of SPED children know what their rights are. They will fight for those rights and they will win. They have allways had to fight and they are very good at it. CHIPS children are added to classrooms on a monthly basis. This means that you may have 40 children to transport in September and in December it could jump to 60. Was this figured into the bid that NRT submitted? If NRT can not fufill all of a childs transportation requirements and the parents are forced to drive that child then the town will have to pay that parent for transporting that child. REQUIRED BY LAW! I wonder how often this will happen. This will be a nightmare for the parents and children and the taxpayers and we will have to live with this for 3 years. Not distractions, reality. All the hidden costs will eat up those savings and possible lawsuits will end up costing us even more. Just wait and see.

As an employee of NRT, I can say that we have some of the most caring, experiened drivers in the business of SPED driving. Does anyone realize that we have monitors for the children when required. I am proud of our record of service to communities.
