Can someone explain how laying off 30 firefighter going to same money when the mayor has already said that it is going to cost him $16,000.00 per day when these firefighters should have been working.

Lay off firefighters and them pay OT to cover the positions what a savings!!!!!!!!!!

this is a bandwagon to villify those who are not responsible for the current fiscal downfall, blame police, fire and teachers, the rallying cry of republicans in democrats clothing! the issue is not the "pay cut" which many of us "union scavengers" have agreed to. the greater issue is minimum manning which the governor, some reps and senators and mayors are trying to shove down our throat. we have agreed to concessions on pay and cost sharing. we are not agreeing with diminishing the already low numbers needed to properly protect the citizens. brain death occurs in 4 to 7 minutes, do you want to be the one waiting for an out of town rescue because your community decided to layoff?

Lay them all off, they do nothing but eat, drink, and sleep. They are overpaid and underworked. What a bunch of whiney, overpaid, mental midgets.

Hey East Matunuck-Looks like you need a little lesson on Rhode Island law. While you're on your computer today, go to www.ri.gov , and look up Rhode Island General Law 28.9.1-1, also known as the Firefighters Arbitration Act. There you can read how everything from salaries to benefits to working conditions must be negotiated. When you're done, you might want to take the test to be hired in a paid, unionized fire department.......but wait a minute-you're too fat, too stupid, and too much of a coward to become a union firefighter-sorry.

By the mayors and city councils in RI trying to solve the money problems by laying off police officers and firefighters, they are ignoring the bigger problem. When you lay them off you are creating overtime to the rest of the department, oh and by the way you are paying unemployment as well. Everyone is strapped for money, these people have families and many of them cannot afford a pay cut, could you, if this was happening to you. If your company told you tomorrow, we are taking 5%-10% of your pay?? We need these firefighters and police officers on the job, helping us when we are in need and protecting us when we sleep at night.

The single most important point here is that the union flinched. They were facing a loss in court and they back peddled quickly to try to save face. The precident is now set and more of the same is in store for other communities. A big win for the taxpayer, despite what proud union fire lighter may say to spin this. His position was that nothing would happen and we'd all pay. Well, something did happen and the taxpayers must never give up on breaking the death grip of union thugery.

Once again Target Shooter-it's all about the numbers. Click on this website's link to "all posts", and you'll see that in one day, "Sean Penn winning an Oscar" and "Octuplet Mom" stories than the firefighter layoffs have had in 2 weeks. And I'm not counting the fact that half of the comments have been from you and I!!! When are you going to get it?-the vast majority of people don't care about this issue. As a matter of fact, if I wasn't having so much fun taunting you, I wouldn't be on here.

I wonder what it is that you do for a living. Maybe you could suit up and try to fight one of these early morning fires, like the two in Woonsocket. Without these firefighters, many people would of perished. Maybe you should get off your recliner and stop name calling. It just shows how immature you are and maybe you should move out of your mom's basement and get a life!!

I guess Riverside had a very good point, you have no idea what reality is. Instead you insult everyone. I will ask the question again...Why don't you suit up and go in to fight a fire, are you even capable. These men and women put their lives on the line everyday to help strangers. Not everyone is cut out to do that. They deserve the pay they were guaranteed in their contract as well as the manning they need to keep us safe. So instead of insulting everyone, you might want to support our brave firefighters, the deserve at least that. I agree with Riverside that you should move out of your mom's basement!!

To "Another Riversider": It's obvious what we have here-East Matunuck is just another disgruntled loser who was too fat, too stupid, or too much of a coward to be hired by a fire department. I've been on the job for 21 years, and I've seen it numerous times. Idiots such as "East Matunuck", "Fly Guy", and a few other losers fail test after test, and become so jealous and enraged, they now turn on those they tried to join in the first place. I actually get a kick out of listening to some of them-they can be entertaining at times. Anyway, thank you, Riversider, for standing up for my profession. You can rest assured myself and my fellow firefighters will always be there to protect you and your family.

Once again East Matunuck, your ignorance comes shinig through loud and clear-I'm so sorry you didn't have the skills, abilities, or courage to become a paid professional firefighter, but there's hope-I hear Wal-Mart in South Carolina is looking for greeters-perfect job for a useless, anti-union scab such as yourself.
