North Port is an ok town, however there are no jobs here.I have lived here for 2 years and still an unemployed healthcare worker. Crime is bad. I do not know about the schools as my kids all are from another state. I am considering the move back to the Tampa area. Think twice before you move. Good luck

The housing is cheap now because there are no jobs here. It is one of the largest forclosure areas due to overbuilding. You are better off moving to Sarasota because you are going to have to drive there anyway to find a job. There is really nothing in this town. I find myself having to always drive to another town to do anything.

I moved here 10 mos. ago from TN. There are no jobs here (thank goodness I am retired), and housing is VERY cheap. I don't know about the school. All in all, it is a nice place to live. You can always find something to do. There is loads of places to eat and shop around the area.

would have to agree, not a good town for kids, alot of drugs, no jobs, and really not alot of future here. There are many better areas with housing in the same price range where you don't have to worry about foreclosures. This town could have been alot better, but it was planned poorly. For years all they cared about was developement at all costs, now that it has died, it has really ruined this place.

its a shame to see even teachers kids at school , you would think since they have a job they could afford to buy their kids decent clothes and when the clothes get stained buy clean ones but i dont see that. how ghetto are these parents. i take care of my child first and foremost i make sure he has CLEAN clothes and food before myself

I don't know what part of North Port some of these folks live in but I can't believe it's the same city that I know. The kids I run across in the malls and in the 10 mile radius where I ride my bike seem to be clean, respectful and courteous - even above the level one finds in larger cities. The shopping here and in adjacent Port Charlotte is good, clerks are pleasant and helpful. Both the North Port and Port Charlotte cultural centers provide loads of programs, shows, entertainments, courses and activities. The Sarasota County library system accessed through the North Port library is excellent.

While I do take the precaution of keeping my doors locked, the only breakin of which I am aware in my neighborhood during the 4 years I've lived here turned out to be "an inside job" - buddies of the 19-year old son of a neighbor - who were promptly apprehended by the NP police.

Yes there are many foreclosed homes because NP is a city of young families, many of whom had the misfortune of buying their first homes just at the wrong time in the price cycle. Yes the city is struggling with budget shortfalls due to the economic downturn. But for newcomers, there are incredible bargains to be had -- lovely newer homes for a fraction of what they would cost to build.

Like any city, North Port has its share of complainers, but I'm happy to say that most of the city residents I know are getting on with their lives, maintaining their homes, supporting the community and local activities. If you move here and participate in community life you will find a warm welcoming community.

There are a lot of homes being rented be less than desirable neighbors. It is a shame because up until a couple of years ago, this was a great city. I think it will come back... but not for a while. I would not buy here if I had another chance to decide. I would look at Sarasota, away from a main road, or Venice.

I recently bought a house in North Port and plan to move there this summer. On my many trips there in recent months I have encountered only very friendly/helpful neighbors, and clerks. Just as "any town - anywhere" I am sure there are a few warts, but I choose to believe this area will once again be on the upswing....with the housing market as it now is, ther could not be a better time to invest in some great property. One great advantage of the Sarasota County school system is your child can attend any school in the county and there are many very good schools in the area....

this is a response to the above ..what shopping are you talking about? were ? they have a wal mart a lowes and a home depot! shopping were the city does not have a mall yes a mall with macys sears and so on,the city does not have parks ! the city needs side walks for people to walk thoughout not just on the major roads, what is a kid to? do after school? what is a kid to do on the weekends? no hotels for family to come and stay as they are on vacation.so lets go over this again ...the city has no major resturants to eat at ..no mall no hotels,no movies no hospital no jobs no parks shouls i keep going if you are over 50 and you do not want to do anything and buy cheap then move to north port.

Hey Brian, when you move to a city you must consider the surrounding area also. No mall- Port Charlotte mall is right on the border ( really - really close ) restraunts - ditto! PLUS just how far away is Sarasota? Outlet Malls? The Ocean? No the whole package is not in North Port, but look around, you don't have to look far to find just about any entertainment, activity, advantage you might want.....hey, there is even a bunch of "entertainment" on this site !!

When i moved to Northport i believed that the city was in the right direction you have to get on lists just to build a house .but the commission board allowed for all the housing without thinking of commercial building and jobs would be needed for all the people to be moving in.AS you can see as of today there are no hotels no malls no jobs! sarasota is 30 minutes away if you are going to call yourself a CITY THen you would need the simple things and a hospital is a simple and needed service you need for a city of 50,0000 peolpe plus.THEcity is not at all kid friendly,i still own a house there which i rent out but i would say it was the biggest mistake i ever made when i went there.it is a good place if you are 60 and over.i do have 2 kids and there are many other places in florida that cater to familys and kids.northort is not the area for that.

I too am from Ky. I lived in Sarasota for 30 yrs. in the same house. Our son bought a house in North Port this spring. Everytime we went to visit him, I loved North Port more. It's quiet, wonderful neighbors and not much traffic. Sarasota is close and Port Charlotte is great for shopping and eating out. Wish I'd moved there years ago.
