With Heineman’s encouragement, Sen. Mike Friend of Omaha introduced a bill that would verify the legal immigration status of anyone applying for welfare. The Legislature's judiciary committee killed the bill last week.

Now, in a letter Heineman sent Monday to newspapers across Nebraska, he is asking the committee to reconsider its decision.

And, to show how the system would work, Heineman invites the media to demonstration of the federal government’s Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements March 5 in Lincoln.

Under the bill, anyone applying for benefits would sign an affidavit declaring they are either a U.S. citizen or a resident alien. Agencies would then check that information against a federal database. Applicants determined to be in the country illegally would be denied.

Why don't they ask the residents of L.A. County?

Los Angels County:

10% of Los Angeles County residents are illegal aliens (the highest percentage of county residents in the country)

Illegal aliens cost the county greater than one billion dollars per year in taxpayer costs, not counting education.
Breakdown:
$444 million for welfare and food stamps
$400 million for health care
$220 million for correctional services, law enforcement and other public safety costs

New statistics from the Department of Public Social Services reveal that illegal aliens and their families in Los Angeles County collected over $37 million in welfare and food stamp allocations in November 2007, which is up $3 million dollars from September.

Children of illegal aliens receive 25% of welfare and food stamp money.

I'm a 3rd generation Italian-Irish-Czech-Croation-U krainian and all my ancestors entered through Ellis Island as well. Both my grandfathers proudly served in WWII.
My point is that when the Irish came, when the Italians came, when each successive generation of immigrants came--they were subjected to bigotry, hatred, and the like.
We have to stand up for human rights here.
Many of the people who are being deported are NOT criminals and many DO pay taxes.
It is not as simple as being LEGAL or ILLEGAL. There are various forms of papers that are somewhere in-between--work visas, student visas, travel visas, etc.
And many countries have different policies and require yearly renewal at EXHORBITANT fees!--its a racket.
Also, many people who were caught in Irving were subjected to "check-point" stops which is a Civil Rights violation.
Also, entire MALLS, apartment complexes, etc. are being scathed as if they are "hunting" people and people are being rounded up and stuffed in buses.
This HAS to stop. Let's help people FIX their papers, NOT treat them as sub-human.

"Civil Rights" are for U.S. citizens and legal immigrants. Not ILLEGAL ALIENS since they are not subject to the jurisdiction of the U.S..

It is against our Federal laws for ILLEGAL ALIENS to rent or obtain housing in the U.S.. When looking for criminals one usually goes to the places where you expect them to be.

"Fix their papers"? Most ILLEGAL ALIENS don't have any---unless you count the stolen Id they purchased on the street corner.

All criminals are human beings---murderers; rapists; burglars; robbers; thieves and ILLEGAL ALIENS. They all must pay for their crime according to our laws. In the case of ILLEGAL ALIENS the punishment is deportation.

the state of nebraska regularly provides benifits to illigal aliens through the department of health and human services. Letters of medical entitlement, home based services, and child welfare fuunds are used to provide services to abuse neglect families, and families of status offence or delinquent youth placed in their custody by the courts. case managers are directed to ignore the facts that the families are not legally entitled to be in htis country. The govenor knows this and does nothing to stop it.
